I saw a thread that discussed this and concluded that 5:4 is faster than 1:1. Can anybody help me locate this thread? I've been searching around but can't find it.
If 5:4 can produce 2-2-2-5 timings and the 1:1 does 3-4-4-8, 5:4 will usually come out on top. However, it depends on what your exact needs are as to which will be faster.
it's a board issue as well. my nforce2 board will not run at anything other than 1:1 ratio in single channel. you must understand that a 1:1 ratio means that there are no wait states between the cpu and ram and theoretically then should always be faster. ppls use different ratios in order to get a better o/c usually.
With AMD, 1:1 is always the faster case. Increased bandwidth will NOT help an AMD system, the latency penalty would be much too huge. This is on the K7 architecture though, I know nothing of the K8.
With Intel. It's a mixed bag. I believe, you should invest in low latency PC3200-3500. Set it to 5:4, and get wicked timings. Some benchies have shown that 1:1 with lax timings are ahead, other shows that 5:4 with tight timings come ahead.
What I personally think, the dual channel takes care of the bandwidth, now give her latency
