5.1 with Headphones Question...

I have 5.1 surround sound (Z64s to be exact) and i was wondering why when using headphones the volume doesn't go very loud at all and i cant control the volume from the control on the center speaker?

Where are the headphones plugged in? The source (your sound card) just doesn't have the power to properly drive them to acceptable levels, and I'm guessing the headphones are higher impedance. Send a PM to MisterX to find out more about headphone amps and the benefits they provide

hmm, you sure the problem is the sound card? cuz when i do not have the headphones in the sound is really nice...and the phones are plugged into the center speaker

any ideas?

What headphones, what soundcard? Have you tried plugging the headphones directly into the sound card?

sry...i lied a lil by sound card i meant the onboard sound on my huttle and the headphones work fine so there is nothing wrong there...

gosh i'd like to know what's going on...

Well if you refuse to answer our questions or respond to our suggestions, there's not much we can do to help is there? I never suggested that there's anything wrong with your headphones.

i apologize for anything i said...or didn't say...but ...when plugging the headphones directly into the soundcard i get the same volume, the sound card is an onboard Intel one, the haedphones are cheap sony mdr-v150

Lastly, when i plug in a 2.0 set of speakers that i have i can crank up the volume really high.

any thoughts?

the volume you speak of should only control the speakers, and i don't think they control the headphones / the headphone jack. what happens if you just plug your phones straight into your mother board?

umm you can't get 5.1 sound in 2.0 headphones hehe. but i think what you mean is the centerchannel doesnt exhist and so in 2.0 it feels like some audio is missing.

in control panel go to "sounds and audio"
under speaker settings click "Advanced" and set it to stereo headphones, click okay
then click speaker volume, make sure both left and right are at the same level.

lastly in any intel audio software or whatever you might have running in your task bar, make sure nothing is on mute or at the proper settings. make sure this is set to headphones too if it exhists.

Your headphones are only 24 ohms, you should be able to drive them at a decent level. Check for volume in a few places: media player, speaker volume (in control panel->Sounds->Speaker Volume), master volume, and individual volume (wave).

That's probably because those speakers have a built-in amp.

It isn't that audio is missing, the problem is that the volume does not go up very high at when using headphones plugged into the center channel. After changing the setting in contorol panel to stereo headphones, i get the same results. And when plugging the headphones into the mobo i get the same thing since the software volume only goes so high (not very high). And like i said before there really can't be a problem with the software cuz i can plug the 2.0 speakers i have in and use headphones and get huge sound.

Anyone have anymore ideas?
