I currently have z5500s for a 5.1 setup, and was wondering if i bought a set of z2300s and connected them as side speakers would it make a decent 7.1 system or would it sound disproportional. Dumb idea? They're only $90 on newegg shipped.

Assuming you mean you'd connect the extra speakers to your sound card's side channel outputs, yes?

My main question is: why? Do you want to have to deal with two separate volume controls and two subwoofers? Most importantly: Do you really think that you'll hear a difference?

I dont know, i've read that 7.1 for games is really nice. the volume control issue was the only downside that i found myself. Is there a problem with multiple subs?

No, but you'd be better off buying satellites since the bass is redirected anyway.

If you have your z5500s set up properly with all the speakers at equal heights and distances and with the speaker angles correct, all of the 7.1 information is going to be there and represented accurately.

so if i wanted to get something for 7.1, what should i get i would want decent speakers that would match the quality of z5500s i have

There might be decent 7.1 sets out there, but it's not going to "omg blow you away" compared to your current setup. It'd be kinda like throwing money out of the car window while on the highway.
