First of all I don't know if it's my onboard sound(sig says audigy2 zs but it won't work with my logitech z-640) but I can't seem to get my rear speakers working for my movies/music. They however work perfectly fine in my audio test in my sound control panel. I'm assuming the movie/music files aren't encoded to be compatible with 5.1 speakers?

If you go to the creative sound panel you can enable the CMSS and you should hear sound from the rears

Like what software are you using for your music? My old SB Live couldn't run the rear speakers with WinAmp but if I used Windows Media Player it would get the rear speakers working.

So it might be your software choice.

I have A soundblaster live built on to my nforce 4 and if you just enable the CMSS you get rear sound from any software

well the software is c-media xear 3d. the card itself is just an onboard.

thats strange i use to have the 640s gave them to my parents and they use it on the nforce2 mobo (no soundstorm) and they get the 5.1

I had a similar issue with my sound blaster 2, here's the fix, install new patch or reinstall the latest bios. Go to the THX set up, make sure your set to 5.1, change settings to 96Khz output and analog audio. Then go the the windows audio settings and make sure it's set up on 5.1.

arg i was afraid it was something to do with my drivers... i understand all the instructions except the bios. how do i reinstall the bios?

this is a irrelvant question but did your audigy2 also have a problem not working with headphones or speakers that doesn't have an externaly powered amp?

Negative, only the rear speaker stopped working, anyway you can test your speakers to a different source to see if theyr dying? Anyways Easy way is go to Start->Control Pannel->Add and Remove programs, then remove creative audio console and sound blaster 2. Download latest software, have cd handy since sound blaster 2 online updates for some reason require cd, this should fix all. Update your mobo bios if you can.
