Hey guys,

My mom asked me to get my dad some 5.1 speakers for his PC for Christmas. He plays FPS's and listens to a lot of music. I have a Logitech set from three years ago and it appears there are not many options like their use to be. Can't find any Klipsh or the Logitech speakers that I have. The Logitech 5500's says no returns on Newegg. I don't want to get something that can't be returned if he doesn't like it.

What speaker system is everyone going to now days? Is everyone hooking their PC's up to receivers and buying better bookshelf speakers? What sound card would be good for this type of setup. Is there a 2.1 system that blows everything away now?

I need to help my mom out and I'm honestly short on time to really research this. Can anyone help. There isn't really a budget on this.

If it's for your dad, get some real speakers. Pc speakers are kids toy. They havent make a new/decent set in years. If you have to get 5.1 pc speakers, i guess the logitech z5500 win by default since there's really no one in the game.

P.s i would take an Onkyo home theater in a box over the Z5500. You get a real receiver and the option to upgrade to better speakers.
 
Do you have pictures of the area so we can get an idea of desk or wall space?

If possible I'd get a receiver + 5 surround speakers + a sub + a set of headphones.

Questions...
1. Top end of the budget for everything ($2000-3000?)
2. Size of the Room
3. Do you have to have 5.1?
 
If we went with the Onkyo, what would be the best way to hook this setup up? Which sound card and output would he need?

I don't have a pic of the room, It's in his basement so there is room. His desk is custom built and has plenty of room as well. I don't think Mom would want to spend over 800-1000.

It doesn't have to be 5.1. So what is a good setup for 2.1?

Yeah, as others said, what is the budget? Also does your dad want some tiny sats + sub or can he deal with bookshelfs?

If it is 5.1, you may want to look at HTIB sets as well as the Logitech. They are all over the place in terms of price of course and they require separate amplification.

Just a small example of 5.1 speakers you can get.

Edit: Wow $800 - $1000? Well you can get a pretty nice 2.1 with that. Anything from NHT, Usher, Hsu, Ascend, and a whole lot more. If its 5.1, I think the SVS setup may fall into that price for some nice kicking bass (get a cheap receiver from accessories4less to drive it).

Edit2: Just as an example (if your dad doesn't mind DIY kits) my Dayton RS621, HSU STF-1 and Marantz SR5001 (now you can get a SR5003) costed about that price range. I am just being biased. :p

Optical and Coaxial (RCA) would be perfect for that system you listed. Or even HDMI if his sound card has HDMI audio.


There are sooooooo many 2.1 setup you can purchase, but I think this is a VERY good price for what you're getting.

Gizmo + a pair of WAF-1s combo for $234 shipped. The amplifier is nowhere near as big as a receiver so he might appreciate that.

Add in a high quality subwoofer that will fit into your dad's space and he'll be golden IMO if you're going the 2.1 route.
 
I think that 5.1 KEF system Zenshi mentioned looks pretty good for the money. $400 for the system + $300-$400 for a decent receiver. The KEF satellites say they get down to 100HZ which would be very respectable for little satellites in this price range if true.
