I have been reading all these posts and people are spending like $2000.00 on their surrond sound setup. I am just 17 and looking for a cheap way out. Is it even possible to get a medicore setup for ~200?

I needed a $200 range system for my Xbox 360 setup and ended up buying this model:

It has really good sound and plenty of bass. The sound is clear and good for such a cheap unit. It also has optical input (Which i needed for my Xbox).

I really like it, and for a 5.1 system that is around $200 it is awesome. It sounds way better than all the other cheap ones at that price range. The only thing it does not have is AV switching like the more expensive ones do (it does not handle the video and audio, only the audio)

The Onkyo HTIBs seem to get pretty decent reviews, and they don't cost too much. Like this one, for $250:

I'm sure they've got one in the $200 range as well.

Though like Crim mentioned, you'll get more bang for your buck if you buy used.
Ya, or he could get a warrantied refurb from an authorized dealer for as low as $159 + S/H:

OP: it's going to be hard to find a better bang for your buck than a refurb onkyo HTIB. Best part is you can incrementally upgrade everything to help spread costs out over time.

a couple years back when i got my 5.1 system i went to the Sony outlet store where they sell refurb units, and i got a sweet 1,000 watt system for about $130. It has all the nice optical and digital inputs that i need (though as i get more nicer equipment i find that i need more from this 5 year old system).

wattage doesn't = sound quality

OP if you still haven't purchased yet, and you have a paypal account, you may want to register for this PayPal $20 off $50 promotion: http://paypal.promotionexpert.com/holiday/

Since accessories4less accepts Paypal you could qualify for the discount and get another $20 off. That would bring the price down to $139.99 + S/H

You must register for the Paypal promo no later than wednesday Nov 22nd, and the purchase must be made between Nov 23rd and Dec 30th.

An Onkyo Home theater package is a good idea. They have good sound. Or you could pick up a reciever and at least your left and right channels for now. Then buy the center and rear surrounds later.
