I'm getting a new rig with a 3000+ (s939 A64), but I'm a little worried about memory issues. I WAS planning on getting 2x512mb, and upgrade to a total of 4x512mb later on.

So my question is is it better to have 4x512mb or 2x1gb? I'm pretty much 2gb will be a standard at least by next year, so I just want to be prepared.

Do you care more about having a lot of ram than ram speed and latency?

If you want speed and latency, 2x512 is the best. If you just need a lot of raw memory space for whatever reason, then 2x1gig is good. 2x512 is good to start with, then add another 2x512 when your memory needs increase more than your need for speed. A64's cant do 4x512 very well, though some Rev.E can do 4x512 DDR400 1T.

the Athlon 64 memory controller is onboard and doesn't like having 4 sticks of ram.

The older Winchester and Newcastle will run 4 sticks at DDR 333 @ 2T timings, your may be able to get to DDR 400 manually, but your stuck with 2T.

The new Venice cores can do 4 sticks at DDR 400 @ 2T, its supposed to be an improved 2T, but still 2T non the less. You might be able to get 1T, but the supported command rate is still 2T.

I haven't heard anything on the dual-cores and 4 sticks.

So basicly, yes its better to have 2x1 gig.

On this subject something I've always been curious about...

Obviously if I run 2x512mb on Socket 939 I can choose to take advantage of dual channel... but if down the road I throw 2x1gb in the other two slots (for arguments sake on a DFI NF4 Ultra w/3000+ Venice), will it still operate in dual channel?

La la!

Yeah, dual channel indeed. Also, high latencies ahoy! Everything will be slowed down, but if you need that extra 2 gigs that badly, then, whatever.

Indeed... just curious if it mattered w/r/t size o' modules in the two banks of two. Spiff0licious. Obviously to keep latencies reasonably low yer looking at a practical limit o' 2 gigs.
