Should I get a 4X or 8X DVD RW ??
What is the difference? Really worth it?

Which brand should I get, why?
(plextor is too expensive, im a student so something cheap)

Thanks

I'm not completely sure on brands, but the plextor, I believe, shows the most speed improvement at 8x. Remember that the "x" rating is not a true speed rating. An 8x burner is not going to burn twice as fast as a 4x. The review I read showed about a 30% improvement for the plextor. Price-wise, I would stay 4x if you want one soon.

really depends, how often are you gonna burn DVDs, eh?

base your buying deicisions on wtf you're gonna do w/ the shit you buy.

(4x should be fine.)

I havn't been keeping up on media lately but i doubt there is an 8x media available anywhere yet. And if there is its expensive. Just get a good 4x dual format burner. Nec, Nu Tech, Lite On, MSI, Pioneer are all good brands. Just get whatever you can afford. Plextor is the best but expensive.

I just flashed my LiteOn 411S to 811S speeds. It works.
I recommend buying the Plextor 8x, though. It relies on a very powerful laser so can actualy burn 8x onto lower rated media-an excellent feature, I think.

Ya but the plextor 8Xis like 260$ can and the liteon 4Xis like 130... (CAN).

How long does it take to burn a full dvd to a 4x???

Is the liteon good?

Thx

I've had the TDK 4x drive but now have the Plextor 8x drive. 4x speed for full dvd was around 22-25 min. 8x depending on the media can cut it down to about 8-9 min. I have memorex DVD+R media that burns around 11 min with the Plextor.

Damn hit the wrong button LOL

full dvd burns on my nd1100a in 14:50 (4x)
dvd decryptor reports burning speed when burning an image as a constant 4.1x

I've heard good things about the Lite-On. You can get Dual mode DVD burner from NewEgg for around $130. It burns +R at 8X and -R at 4X. I say go for it. I'm saving up for it right now!

I've read a few reviews (well, the CDFreaks one and experiences people had) about the NEC 2500A and it seems like it has very good writing quality, even on media of lower quality. It seems pretty cheap too - I've seen it on special for about $178 Cdn. here.

I have this very drive installed currently. Of course, I got the drive on Thursday (A day early, go FedEx & Newegg) but the dvd-r's won't be here until Monday. It does burn CD's good, but that's all I've been able to do with it so far.

Also depending what you want to use the dvd for (data backup or movie backup), try looking at the reviews on dvdrhelp to see which media is compatible with what player. This is probably more important if you plan to backup and play movies on standalone a dvd player rather than data backup.

My plextor 708A will finish a full DVD in about 7 minutes, its freaking fast and quiet too.

LiteOn burners are some of the best. Plextor, LiteOn, Nu Tech, Pioneer are all top quality brands. Unless your time = money who cares if the 4x is even twice as slow as the 8x burners? Waiting a few extra minutes doesn't mean much to me with burning dvd's if i get the burner alot cheaper.

I can get it at my local Walmart for $99.

You're saying you can get the 8X Lite-On burner at your local Wal*Mart? I did a search on their web site, and the $99 DVD burner I found was an HP that only does DVD+R at 4X. I'm talking about a Dual Mode Lite-On that does +R and -R, with +R at 8X.

The box was Lite-on brand, not a repackage. dual format -+. dont have the model #, I saw it a couple of times on the shelf and told myself to buy it, but had a lack of funds at the time. It seems they dont always keep em', so if Im lucky, Ill see it again(and I dont care if Ive got money or not, I'll layaway it)!;)

I got the Lite-On 811s and am very satisfied. Silent, fast but there's no 8x media!. Yes it will burn to 4x media at 8x (tried on Memorex and Arita's) but not always perfectly. About half of the movies I burned at 8x on 4x media skip somewere usually leaving out from 2-50sec of video which can be annoying. I'd recommend you get it anyways, the media will come out soon and it's only about $25 more than the 411s on newegg. I good deal for almost twice the speed.

i just purchased pioneer's new A07 drive. it writes 8x in both formats. i haven't installed it yet but i'ma smiling. :D
