Is this the mobo I need?

http://www.wiredzone.com/Supermicro-H8QGi+-F-Motherboard-SWTX-w--Quad-1944-pin-S-G34~10020000~0.htm

Does it take 6200/6300's?

non-ECC RAM?

1.35v RAM?

Optimum 4 sticks RAM per CPU?

Are 61xx 12-cores the target chip?

Overclockable by an idiot?

Just trying to figure out pricing and life expectancy.

------------------------------

I know this has been discussed a hundred times, but much of the lingo goes over my head, and things change over time. What does an Idiot need to know for April 1, 2013 about this config?

GL has better voltage regulation, which can help with OCs, especially high ones. That being said, lots of people have had success with Gis (and if you're using lower clocked chips, there's probably no difference).

For retail MC you'd want UDIMMS, as memory is part of the picture for overclocking. For ES chips of any flavor, it's less important, but MC will benefit from faster memory, while for IL/AD, memory type and speed is basically irrelevant.

1.35v or 1.5v vram, power draw difference is not very big, while price difference often is.

There is no 'target' chip. Retail MC chips can be over clocked via a custom bios, retail IL/AD cannot. All ES chips can be easily over clocked. PPD/watt, AD>IL>MC. Absolute PPD is more complicated, but clock for clock, the equivalent chips (i.e. 6174 and 6276) are very similar, while each generation has been 'easier' to get higher clocks (comparing ES only obviously).

GL is a model designation of the Supermicro G34 quad family?

Gi, ditto?

MC?

UDIMMS non-registered RAM?

IL = 6200?

AD = ?

MC = ?

AD = ?

I do know that 16 core 6200's are not as fast Clock for Clock, Core for Core as Opteron 8400's. I have a 2P ASUS 62xx ES 16c x 2.6ghz. It is not much faster (00:00:20 TPF) than a 24 core 8439 at 2.8ghz.

Taking the next step eh Q? These are some of the exact questions I planned to ask, very soon.

Thanks for the info.

EDIT: MC= Magny Cours , AD = Abu Dhabi

????

Yes.

Magny-Cours -- 6100 series.

UDIMMS non-registered RAM?
Yes.

IL = 6200?
Yes.

Abu Dhabi, 6300 series

Yes, that's the least expensive GL out there.

I'm obsessive.

To put it in prospective, somebody (The Expert of All Things Diesel) told me that a newer Smog Control diesel pickup would never make 400hp.

So I built one that made 936rwhp (about 1100hp at the crankshaft), and went 197.xxx mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in a 3/4 ton GMC heavy-duty pickup.

Then I got bored. :D

Thanks for the abbrev's. ;)

OK, can you call my wife and tell her it's a necessary repair part?

THNAKSSS!!!! :eek::D;)

OK, I ordered the Mobo, and got four 6176's (12c x 2.3ghz).

If my goal is to overclock this to 2.53ghz (220bclk), is that realistic?

If so, what kind of RAM has worked well for overclocking?

Can i get a ride in that?:cool:

Get the GL board and hop on irc, we'll help ya :)

Cold be, get some 1600 cl9. You more than likely will not run at 1600 but gives some room to work.

Do follow the overclocking bios step by step.

That should be a reasonable goal. You may do a bit better or worse depending on the chips.

I'd recommend DDR3 1600 1.5V sticks with timings as tight as you can afford, either 1 or 2 GB.

I agree with Musky, this is completely likely to work. I have 4P 6176SE @ 230 currently, 760W at the wall. What sc0tty8 said, get your parts together and get on IRC. I did so over a year ago and haven't looked back, much to my bank account's chagrin, but to my PPD's delight ;-)

Will do IRC when I get the parts together.

It's actually not that fun to drive. It's over 100 deg F and you're wearing a full funny car firesuit. You are strapped in so tight you can barely breath. The tires have 90PSI in them and the suspension is hard as a brick. It has so much power it fishtails up to about 150mph so you pedal it. Once it hooks up though, it pins you to the seat.

Video from our first year at Bonneville: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J0CQN5vV0g At the half way point you see in-cab video and hear the tires break loose every gear. We had no parachute so we were not allowed to exceed 175mph.
The 197.xxx video isn't very good and the engine exploded at ~202mph that year.

Back on subject, the 1.35v RAM and 6300 capability is just looking 5 years down the road.
Eventually, the machine will be obsolete, but those features might extend it's life or allow it to be used for other purposes.

AMD has changed its Opteron roadmap.
The old roadmap put the Steamroller Opteron at a late 2014 launch.
The new roadmap puts them at a late 2013 launch.

What socket?

Don't know, the original roadmap that had the launch in late 2014 had a new socket (GC36) and was though to have DDR4 support.

But they might now use G34 for steamroller and use GC36 for Excavator.

Out of curiosity, can we even overclock a H8QGL-iF+ board??
