4K BD-Rom Question?

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if there is an internal 4K BD-Rom drive available for PC's? Just curious as I have not seen much of them.

current BD media lacks enough storage space for a full-length 4K high-quality movie. probably, the next optical media format will be released in 2015.

H.265 doesn't just magically crap out high quality, low space files. There are always drawbacks. It took quite awhile for consumer hardware to properly playback 720/1080p content back in the day. We know encoding takes a huge hit, but so too does the power needed to decode those files. Although it's not nearly as bad decoding compressed content as it is compressing it.

Anywho. Nobody is really doing the math on this one. We are using 50GB discs for 1080p movies. Now we know a lot of that is filler material where maybe 25-30GB or so is the actual movie (lot of wasted bit rate to add features), but people forget that 4K is 4x as much data. Using H.264 that would work out to 100-120GB+ for the movie itself. At the VERY BEST H.265 can offer a 50% reduction. This isn't in all scenarios as of this moment in time. Things will improve, but currently most encoders are not living up to the hype promised and just lack optimizations. It took H.264 many many years for these improvements.

With that said you're now taking 100-120GB down to 50-60GB in the best circumstances. That's only to get the same equivilent bit rate for 4K as you have currently with 1080p. I guarantee you, like Twitch.TV, Amazon, iTunes, Cable, Satellite TV, etc. They're going to bastardize the bit rate to the point 4K is a joke the same way 1080p is. The temptation to use a lower bit rate will be too strong. For instance:

1080p movie encoded @ 8Mbps using H.264
1080p movie encoded @ 4Mbps using H.265

Artifacts are already the scrooge of High-Def. Instead of keeping that same 8Mbps infrastructure you could encode at the same 8Mbps rate using H.265 and get a far superior equivalent (16Mbps encode).


But I digress.
 
last thing I heard is that 4k blu-rays will use BDXL media, so as long as the optical drive can read that, then you just need software.
 
Why not go back to dual-sided media, like DVDs or Laserdiscs back in the day? :D

Hey, that gives me an idea. Why not make a BD drive with lasers on both sides? That way you wouldn't have to get up in the middle of the movie to flip the disc.

Not enough room in a drive. Doubly so for the slim models in laptops and some desktops.
