i bought this stuff from newegg yesterday and it got here this afternoon...

3.2 lga 775 p4 (e stepping) boxed 540j $209
soltek sl-865pe-775g $69
pqi turbo 1gb dual channel kit $89 (also with a $20 rebate) = $69

this is the base of the system...

i ran prime95 for a couple hours earlier w/no problems. im using the stock heatsink/fan. i bought a thermaltake jungle 512 and afterwards i read some reviews saying its no better than the stock intel heatsink/fan and louder.

im encoding a dvd using cce right now and running two instances of prime...pretty early but everything looks great...

temps are 62-63C at full load after raising the vcore to 1.45 in the bios (which is about 1.35 under load running prime)...not high at all...

i read ONE review on this board before i decided to give it a try, im glad i did...can't really beat it for $69 bucks...

im having to run the memory @ 5:4 200 mhz (or 400 mhz if you like the marketing)...it didn't like 250 1:1 ratio...oh well it was cheap...

you should really run prime by itself, it uses CPU cycles that other programs arent using, so it needs to be run alone to really stress the chip

for example, my a64 would pass prime for 10+ hours at higher clocks when prime and F@H were running. when i closed F@H and let prime have hte whole chip, it failed at the same speeds.

nice setup :)

I've heard very good thing about pqi RAM. Everyone I know thats into building systems says it's really good stuff.

I may go Intel for my replacement build for the PC I sold, thinking about a Pentium D with the new Asus socket T board, the SLI model, 225 at Newegg. 2 gigs of PQI and a pair of 6600 GT'sin SLI. The board has DDR 2 @ 800 Mhz.

I wonder how that would run compared to the lower latency of the A64 stuff. DDR 800 vs. the on chip controller. I'd like to see a compare on that.

im going to run prime overnight later on, but i need to backup this dvd now ;)

it seems to be decent stuff...89 bucks for a dual channel 1gb kit

it was doing 225 1:1 fine, but i went ahead and skipped right to 250 and it wouldn't run 1:1...this is only the "cheaper" pc3200 turbo memory (2.5 cas)...

the stuff that is a little more expensive might be able to go 1:1

Good job.... But FYI (And anyone else) a 530j with a DFI 865PE-Tag will do 4Ghz no problem and run about the same if not less.

or when dell is running a decent special on the 8400 with 630, you can get a whole computer for same price or less that will clock to 4 ghz

200$ for on the cheap 4ghz? TOO EXPENSIVE! Try 137$...Pentium 4 505 2.66GHZ LGA775. Guaranteed 4ghz all you need to do is bump the fsb to 200 from 133, and you have a P4 580 out of the box. 4ghz, 800fsb, etc...

And that involves no 'overclocking', since 800mhz fsb is "stock" for most P4's generic RAM of any sort will do, and ANY mobo will do.

the tag is about 10 bucks more than the soltek and i doubt it could run a much higher fsb than this board...who knows though...not many reviews of either...

i wouldn't get anything lower than a 3.0 530j with the LIKELY intention of getting over 4...especially using air

im @ 4.1 ghz now...

yeah, but then you have to sacrifice HT

HT is nothing at 4GHZ, you dont feel it at all, unless you're running apps coded to make use of HT.

Socrilles mate, did you ever get around to removing the heatsink and 630 from your 8400 to take pics of your solder mod?

I have a mate with a spare XPS Gen4(don't ask!) and he can't sell it so I may be buying it off him very cheap. Its identical to mine except it has 2x74gig raptors in raid 0 and a 3.2 640 vs mine with the 650 3.4 and single 160gig 7200rpm sata. The question is will the 640's multiplier of 16 yielding a 4.25 OC be any more managable than my 3.4 would be at 4.5. ie will the 3.2 640 OC without the need for voltage changes on Stock Air like your 630 in your Dim 8400.

If it is I'll deffo buy it off him!

you sound like you are pretty sure you can hit 4.25 or 4.5 on stock air cooling...it might not be so easy?

oh and this thead wasn't really about cpu selection, but more about this soltek motherboard...damn good for the price

I'm not pretty sure and that was why I was asking Socrilles. He performed a solder mod on his 925XE and 630 in his Dell Dimension 8400. That mobo supports EE's running on a 1066FSB so the mod switches the mobo from 800 to 1066. Its the only way to OC these Dells because of the bios being locked. So you only get one overclock for each speed 6series depending on the multiplier. Socrilles 630 3ghz yields a 4ghz OC with its multiplier of 15 (200x15=3ghz, 266x15=4ghz) His runs prime stable on stock voltage and stock Dim8400 air cooling. He reckons my 650 3.4 which has a multiplier of 17=4.5ghz would need more voltage and/or water cooling so thats pretty much a no go. I'm just wondering if a 640 3.2 x16=4.2ghz might have a chance with air and stock voltage. If its possible then I know where to get a 3.2 cheap!

Appologies for hijacking mate. Should have PM'd him ;)

I'm running my 530j/865PETAG at over 265FSB with a STOCK HSF and Generic PSU right now. COmbos Pushed 4.2Ghz with my Vantec Stealth 520.

New PSU and XP-90 should be here this week sometime... I'll get a chance to really see what it can do then!

ah no problem...good luck with it...

personally if i scored a good deal on a 8400 i would sell that motherboard for whatever i could and replace it...too much trouble, and since i used to work at dell i never cared for their motherboards much...or their cases

i wanted more of a "guarantee" thats why i chose the 540 over the 530...even though there are no guarantees

Sweet overclock! I wish my 3.0C can do better than 3.3, but any further (even while raising the voltages to 1.65+) it is COMPLETELY unstable. Really pisses me off.. I was hoping I could OC at least to around 3.6ghz while being completely stable.

By the way -- 1000th post. Yay!

I havn't taken the hs off yet still scared of killing the pins. You definitely have a much better chance at 4.25 ghz on air, then the 4.5 ghz. I can't remember from your post, but how recent is his PC, I think Dell always gets the freshest silicon since they go through it so fast, so build time is probably close to processor manufacture time (probably within a month). When I stress my system it hops as high as 4.1 ghz on occasion so yah I think you have a decent chance there should also be away to bump vcore via pin modding but may be more difficult. Oh and this thread is entitled 4 ghz on the cheap so getting to 4 ghz the cheapest is the topic, and if you look at my 4 ghz system below I think it is the cheapest. Also for the person suggesting buying a new mobo. The cheapest XE board with any kind of OC options runs at least $150, which isn't OCing on the cheap.

that is assuming you have to run a 6XX series p4.

Thats very reassuring that yours can go up to 4.1 sometimes Socrilles on Stock 8400 air and voltages. Gives me hope that the improved cooling in the XPS makes this OC a done deal with a 3.2

As for the mates PC, Its an XPS gen4 like mine but about 4 months older. He originally ordered a Gen 3 but his order was screwed up big time when Dell did the Gen3-Gen4 changeover before Christmas. He eventually got his PC about 2 months after order in early February!! Then they screwed up delivery. He got all the boxes except the one with the PC in it! After waiting another 3 weeks he finally recieved the Box with the PC to go with the monitor, keyboard and speakers he had recieved weeks before..................Then he recieved a second box with another identical Gen4 a week after the first (We're at early March at this stage)! At this stage he has phoned them about 5 times and emailed aswell and 5 months later they still haven't collected it. Its un-opened in its box taking up room in his bedroom and he has offered to sell it to me again for peanuts. I turned him down towards the end of March when he offered it to me first as I felt he hadn't given Dell nearly enough time to come and collect it. It got me thinking about getting a new PC though and I decided to actually purchase one myself. Dell managed to screw my order up too and I was waiting from about St Patricks day till mid May till I got my order!!

I dunno but it just looks like the stars are aligning with this one.

A. Dell have had enough time at this stage to collect my mates duplicate XPS and my friend definately doesn't feel guilty at this stage about selling it on and I would no longer feel guilty about buying it.
B. I discover on these forums that there is a method of overclocking a Dell 8400/XPS Gen4 that would require a 3/3.2 6 series which this PC my mate wants to sell me has.
C. My original Dimension 8200 which was relegated to bedroom duties is now getting a lot more use than I expected because my brother has gotten addicted to WOW and can't wait for BF2 and the bedroom PC just isn't up to the task. I can pick up this XPS from the mate for little more than the price of a new GC for that PC. He just wants rid of it at this stage doesn't want to/can't ebay it

I'll probably still buy it off him even if it turns out it has a 5 series and 925x mobo but fingers crossed it has the 925xe and 6 series.

Very Cheap 4+ghz PC!! :D

yah if you can get it cheap I would definitely go for it, my friend once had 5 computers shipped to him, (when he had ordered 1) but he just refused shipment.
