4chan's founder claiming his site is misunderstood is laughable. I think the problem is that 4chan is actually understood all too well. ;)

"It's riffing on a massive scale," Poole told a packed audience in the Austin Convention Centre. "4Chan is misunderstood – people like to think that /b/ [4Chan's infamously random subforum] is the dark heart of the internet. It isn't just that.

4chan misunderstood. EL OH EL. Place is filled with all kinds of creeps, criminals, and just people who shouldn't have Internet access in general.

Yeah, they're fucking stupid. He's just trying to deflect the 4chan=anonymous thing... Lawyers fees, fines, court, civil assessments...

And I wouldn't mind. These little anonymous pricks think they're hot shit, and they just aren't. They 'went after' somebody I know, purporting to have dug up all this information on this person, and the majority of stuff was flat out WRONG. Great fact checking anonymous, you fucking idiots. Funny thing is, take this person from another front, and anonymous could have had tons of much juicier info than what they had pinned to clothing (that anon got wrong anyway). I can use Google too, try getting information on people NOT through easily searchable internet avenues.

Wow, really? So much cursing and anger over a group of people who have little to nothing to do with you? tsk tsk, take your anger to /b/.

Rethink that post?

"They 'went after' somebody I know"

So? What's the point of hating "Anonymous", that defeats the entire idea of what anonymousness is. Same people who "attacked" whomever they were doesn't necessarily mean they're the same people who currently do work with "Anonymous".

"Anonymous" is bigger than 4chan, much bigger. When you think about "Anonymous" and 4chan, think of "Anon" as a gang, and this particular gang likes to hang out at their favorite local pub, 4chan is that pub.

Taking out 4chan will not take out Anon.

possible it isn't, many groups start out with one idea and goal, but then many why join said group and tend to loose sight of the original idea.

Black Panthers are a good example of this, they went from being a meanful group to a mob, same with greenpeace, had a goal and a mission, now it is just a bunch of people trying to bully around other people and doing more harm then good.

Ahh, FFS.
/b/ is indeed the sewer of the intertubes, so what? You're free not to visit it.
/b/ does not equal 4chan. There are plenty of other boards, though not as large.

I've had plenty of laughs there, perhaps I "should not have internet" just so people's vaginas stay sand-free.

As have been mentioned already, /b/ isn't the only section of 4chan. I myself visit /a/, /w/, /v/ and /wg/ and they're relatively a good enough place.

He says they are misunderstood and goes on to say exactly how I view them.

"Zuckerberg's totally wrong on anonymity being total cowardice. Anonymity is authenticity. It allows you to share in a completely unvarnished, raw way,

And 4chan, for better or for worse(debatable) is the cesspool of the internet. These things are not mutually exclusive. In fact I'd say they are inclusive.

somebody you know? great anecdote. sounds really legit too: "MY NEIGHBOR'S HUSBAND'S SECOND COUSIN'S UNCLE!"

so in summary: u mad

when you cant judge information by its source, you are forced to actually debate the information itself, which makes you actually pay attention and think in order to form an oppinion. if everyone would pay the same attention when other speak as they would enjoy themselves, regardless of what you personally believe about the topic at hand, we wouldnt so quickly disregard everything that simply doesnt mesh with our current system of beliefs and ignore those people who might just have something worth hearing. you might actually learn something new if you listened (and 4chan is ripe with information youve never thought about, if you care to wade thru the rest).

this is the benefit of anonymity. if your name and reputation are on the line, you will question making yourself heard if it might impact you personally. you will sometimes hesitate raising even important issues that need to be addressed; topics that may be difficult for many people to discuss or that are generally called taboo. but imagine, if you could question everything; say exactly what you were thinking and discuss anything that interested you; who knows which direction the conversation would take us?

people get caught up in the shock value of all the gore and fap threads. those are superficial; kids playing games and testing what they are allowed to get away with (what would you do if the govt said there were no longer any laws?). rarely does anyone understand the true value of what it means to be anonymous and what it enables you to do.

a good deal of posts on those boards are from people impersonating another, asking questions or making statments from the viewpoint of someone else. outsiders (and journalists) immediately label those people as simple lying teenage trolls doing it for the lulz and taking advantage of others. while that isnt completely false, what is also happening is one person is looking thru the eyes of another. someone is assuming a viewpoint that differs from how they actually feel. most people feel 'sympathy'. very few feel 'empathy' because as a habbit we dont take the time or effort to do this. this kind of behavior also teaches you how to defend yourself from the trickery of others and not be drawn in and become troll chow. this is a valuable life lesson that many still need to learn.

the first reaction most have is to feel sympathy for the victim of, and hatred for, a troll. dont feel too bad- the blame is rightfully half their own for feeding it. the troll is doing you a service of highlighting your weaknesses, its up to you if you learn anything from it.

the way it works, fortunately or not, is all or nothing. if you eliminate the anarchy you eliminate the value; you cant get rid of the bad without destroying the good. we have yet to figure out how to have it both ways.

I go to 4chan to talk anime, movies, music, cars, video games, technology and music. I'm not sure what most of you think 4chan is, but since its creation it has always been a place for people to talk about hobbies and japan.

People can say /b/ isn't 4chan all they want. 99.9999999% of it is.

You sound like someone who doesn't read the other boards.

/sci/ /fit/ /lit/ /mu/ and /fa/ all have nothing to do with /b/, and they're generally entertaining communities filled with off shade humor based on those topics.

Nothing to do with /b/

Yeah. Combined they make up the other .00000001%. I never said they didn't exist.

I don't understand why so many people hate 4chan. I don't visit the site often, but I do know a lot of good came from 4chan. A lot of internet meme's came from them. Anonymous, which started out bad, not turned good. Today's news was Anonymous leaks internal Bank of America Emails. Very interesting information for those who lost their homes.

4chan does bring a lot of good, along with it's bad.

Thats where you went wrong, admitting that the best thing /b/ has done is make new Memes.

Gf argument.

Anonymity can be a good thing. Just look at how many important papers from the founding of our country were written anonymously, like the Federalist Papers.

Can be doesn't mean it is, and on /b/, it almost never is.

4chan is loads better than facebook. I think of 4chan and facebook as the extremes, and I would rather have facebook die than 4chan die because I think 4chan provides a larger net gain in society than facebook ever does or will.

Zuckerberg is a complete douche for saying people who use anonymity on the internet are cowards. People who give out all their info publicly on sites like Facebook are gullible and naive fools. There can be very good reason for using anonymity. For example; Political activists have a very good reason to stay anonymous. The gov. just loves all the idiots that join Facebook so they can keep tabs on them too and not just their fake friends.

I wonder which site has more kiddy diddlers and sexual deviants.

meh.... /b/ might be scum, but the rest of 4chan is great... and things 4chan has spawned, like 4walled ... I and most of my friends can spend hours upon hours scrolling through 4walled...

Sorry man, I tl;dr'ed.

When I asked someone what 4chan was his reply was:

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

Looks like he's 100% right about it being misunderstood, judging from some of the responses to this article. Some people still seem to be under the impression that they're all misanthropic, terrorist, teenage hacking child pornographers who blow up vans.

Do you people still think rock n' roll is hurting our youth? That Marilyn Manson caused the Columbine massacre? That video games create violence? Do you think the internet is a fad? Perhaps you're simply afraid of something new and you're judging it before it has gotten its legs.

It seems like "4chan" is the new abused word like "terrorist" these days. Any thing goes wrong? Someone misbehaving on the internet? Blame TERRORI...err, 4chan!

They just write off an entire segment of internet society (despite their creativity, humor, and ability to accomplish a specific goal with a bunch of strangers) because they heard someone bullied someone else on /b/, or posted child pornography, or insulted something they liked.

This kinda reminds me how most Americans equate Al Jazeera with terrorists, even though they are just another news network.

This reminds of how most Europeans incorrectly assume how most Americans think about *insert subject* here because it makes them feel superior.

4chan isnt all bad, but unfortunately the bad parts are very very large lol

4chan is simply a smaller representation of the internet as a whole. Just like the internet overall, 4chan has many clean, useful, or entertaining areas for people to explore, but its often overshadowed by the extremes going on in a handful of very large areas.

This is the result of a free and open internet. Now the flip side of this is that we can all avoid those areas that disturb us. Whoever wants to seek out those areas can do so.

Anonymity is a double edged sword. Yes, it allows people to speak out with less fear or retribution, but that also gets taken advantage of by less than trustworthy individuals in order to spread propaganda, false accusations, etc, etc. The problem is that not enough people take the time to try and verfiy info they get from those anonymous posters, instead just spreading it like wildfire until its an accepted fact simply becuase its well known.

Basically, there needs to be accountability. Since no one wants more government or laws that would prevent certain speach on the internet, its up to the community to police itself and weed out those that spread false information for whatever reason.
