Just installed an XP-90 with a thermaltake 90mm fan at 52cfm on a non-overclocked Venice 3200+.

Per motherboard monitor - I'm at 48C idle and 18C case temp. It is a hot day..but this is ridiculous no?

I put a dab of arctic silver 5 right in the middle of the core and thats it. Followed the directions and put on the heatsink. Could I have screwed up that bad?!?!? :D
 
Personally I like to spread a thin layer manually with a card or something rather than just putting a glob in the middle and hoping the heatsink distributes the paste evenly, try removing the HS and checking the distribution of the paste.
 
Actually, the way he described is the preferred method for A64's with the IHS. A dab in the center, a lil twist to the right and back again....done.
 
its what the AS5 instructions say I believe.

SO I reseated my heatsink...reapplied less AS this time and tried again.
Same temp deal. :(

I'm currently using a MSI neo2 platinum with latest bios rev of 1.8.
The fan's orientation is used to suck in air currently.

Anyone else have any ideas? I even have the case open and a large fan blowing on it.
Currently at load its at 53C.
 
Are these temps from Corecenter? That still seems really high. Did you adjust your vcore any? If not, I would say its a faulty temp probe, since I don't have any temp issues on my neo2 plat.

i been using this method for many years, i use a toothpick to spread it though.
amd 64 3200+ stock heatsink with AS5, idles at 34C.
took the stock/loud amd fan off and put a panaflo, now idles at 38C on stock heatsink.
 
Side note: I have the XP-120 (different system than the one in my sig) and prefer to blow into the HS as I feel I get more air flow over the ram sticks and the voltage regulators... added bonus is that it's probably easier to blow the dust out as it is on top when I pop the fan.

Yup. Taking from Everest temp monitor and core cell. Both reflect a 45C at idle now.

Motherboard ambient temp shows 28C
 
If those temps are correct then there should definitely be something wrong. I have used both the drop-in-the-center method that AS recommends, and the old thin-spread approach, and I also prefer a thin spread. But then again I also use Ceramique (non-conductive) instead of Silver...

With the XP-120 I tried the fan both in pull- and push-configuration; the difference was like 1C, so that should not be affecting you; I'd expect the XP-90 to work similarly. Mine's sitting on a 3.2GHz northwood, and it reports 32-33C with an ambient of 28-29C at idle, with a 1000 rpm Nexus fan on it (cfm might be less than with your fan) - haven't used it with my 3500+ winchester or x2, so can't compare amd-to-amd.
 
I'd be wary of any software readings. Every single temp monitor I found were all telling me I was running at 50c (3.06 oc'ed to 3.4 with DDen kit) but my BIOS which was telling me 34c.

I finally got an updated verson of AOpen's software and it finally works.

I certainly hope its a board failure.

Cuz I give up. I've reseated up to 5 times now. This time I even tried some Arctic Silver 2!!
According to the bios on bootup shows as 45C idle still. I know my case ventiliation sucks..but 45C!
 
either the reported temps aren't correct (what is the load temp?, how big a jump is it from idle to load?), or maybe the HSF is really concave.
 
Update -

I dropped my core voltage to 1.4v, some reason it was at 1.5v default in the bios.
Everything else is bone stock...

After 10 minutes of prime I'm at 49-50C while the ambient mb temp is 27C.
Idle - 43C.
