I have a 4890 in my PC and I plan on getting Windows 10. But I know AMD has stopped drivers for it even on 7 but I haven't run into a problem yet. I know the site doesn't show an option for a Windows 10 driver when I select the 4xxx cards but do you think there will be some kind of driver for it? I know normally new versions of Windows has drivers built in for older cards. And...I know; I know...I need to upgrade but it's been doing the job for TF2 and Battlefield 4 so I just haven't been motivated to change it. But with Star Wars Battlefront coming I might need to be thinking about it.
 
I thought the same thing about my 8800gtx but there is no driver so far and the generic windows driver causes tons of random crashes and the windows 7/8.1 drivers are no better.

Seems I will be upgrading as well.
 
I have the Windows 10 preview running on a PC with the 4890 without issues. It loaded the driver on OS install. No crashes or issues so far for over a month. It's mainly used to play WoW, Borderlands and some random steam games.
 
Man what would triple 8800gtx's be in terms of today's stuff, maybe a 750ti to 960gtx range? Of course a little more thirsty for electrons ;)
 
Is there a site that tries to rank gpus globally through out all time? I think that would actually be pretty useful. Sometimes I have really old hardware especially because I pass old GPUs down and eventually they make their way into my parents computers who don't really ever game. But sometimes you gotta think about would a new CPU like a 4690K actually beat the performance of a GPU like the 8800. I actually looked at this thread because my mom has a 4890 in an x58 / 920 build.

Windows 10 will have built-in drivers for the 4xxx series radeon cards. That will probably be your best bet, especially for single-card configurations. The biggest downside is that the integrated drivers are unlikely to have the control panel, etc that comes with the regular AMD drivers. That's a bit of a shame, especially because that probably means there is no way to enable crossfire with those drivers.

Using older, actual AMD drivers on Windows 10 would mean using the Catalyst 13.1 Windows 8 drivers, the Catalyst 13.4 Windows 8 Beta drivers, or the Catalyst 13.9 Windows 7 drivers.

It is very strange that there is a newer driver out for Windows 7 than for Windows 8, given how similar the drivers are.

For non gaming a direct performance comparison is not really the most important consideration. The question should be whether or not the integrated solution is "good enough" and offers acceptable (if not better if newer) functionality (eg. hardware video decoding). Otherwise the efficiency trade off (likely 60W+ just at idle with the 4890) would return no real gains in usability.

lol it could be worse, he could be running 2 8800GT's like myself still.. but i don't really play that many high end games anymore these days. just WoWS, league, and Eve Online. all 3 of which the cards do just fine on.
 
The tri-sli is done and paid for and plays the games I use just fine. When I feel the need to play at the most ultra of graphics on something new then maybe I'll upgrade.

Of course, this is completely off topic and I believe the OP got his answer ;)
 
Won't AMD come out with a legacy Windows 10 driver for their older cards?
 
I left my 4890 in my old computer when I built this one (running Windows 10). The built-in graphics on the i7 would seem to leave the old GPU behind so I figured why waste the wattage if I don't need to...
