I picked up a Asus Top GTS 450 over the weekend for 175 taxes in, couldn't find a cheap 5770 here in CND. Yesterday however, a freind offered me a 4890 for $100... so now I'm wondering if I should just save some $ and use the 4890 until prices come down on used 5850/5870's or the 6xxx series. Thoughts?

Pure performance wise, definitely the 4890. The GTS 450 is a step and change down from that, and it's cheaper too.

Given how the 450 scales when overclocked, I'd say a 900-925/3900-4200 450 would be even with a 4890, which IIRC doesn't scale well when overclocked.

Both are nice cards IMO. I'd have trouble choosing between the two.

Here a link for Performance Summary for video cards at http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GeForce_GTX_460_Cyclone_OC_1_GB/31.html

Very nice details of chart for video cards low end to high end.

Hope it help.

nope. the gts450 at 900 barely matches the old 192sp gtx260. only in games that greatly favor Nvidia would the 4890 ever lose to a even a highly overclocked gts450.

EDIT: a stock 4890 is still 13% faster than a gts450 at 925/1850/4000. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTS_450_TOP_DirectCU/28.html

Looks like it's better to take the 4890 then, save $80, and wait until I can grab a cheap 5850 or 6 series card.

well if you get a 4890 then a 5850 will not even be that big of an upgrade. in other words get the 4890 and just enjoy it until it isn't enough to play the games you want and see what is available at that time. really what does the rest of your system look like and what res do you play at???

Play @ 1680x1050. Use some AF but no AA.

X4 955 @stock
4gb Kingston ddr2-800 -5
Gigabyte AM2+ (forget the model)
WD 1TB Black Ed

4890 for $100 Canadian is a good deal I think since usually stuff is more expensive in Canada right? You might want to wait for the 6000 series but otherwise that sounds like a good bang for the buck video card.

4890/$100 Great deal! Then another one later for an even less $$.
If you have the $$ wait for the 6000 series and pick up the $200 model. If you want multi screen gaming in your future, skip the 4000 models. If not it is very competitive either way. If $$ are tight, go the 4890 all the way.
And for general knowledge there are plenty of online distributors, including the Egg, yes, we are about 5% to %10 higher in cost despite the dollar ratio at any given time.
I have seen 5750's @ $105 after rebate. The low end 5700 series is what is been on super sale up here. The 5800 series has maintained its ultra premium $$ stand point. Despite its age and rumours.
My feeling is that AMD is trying to super dominate the main-stream. These new cards will give 5800 series performance at Nv 460 card prices! In this day of additional cards, I think the energy requirements are becoming more and more relevant. I'll take a 5860 for $225 please. And eventually two.

At that res you should be able to run everything with max settings with a little AA and AF. Give it a little more voltage with some good cooling and get the core speed up there, that card still has a lot of power behind it.

I have a 4890 and I play at the same resolution that you do. It smokes the piss out of pretty much any title I throw at it.

I should have studied 4890's bandwidth advantages over cards like the 4870, which I'm more familiar with. I reviewed two 450's however, and judging by feel and not by the cold hard stats, when at higher speeds (like the reference card at 920/4000 and the EVGA FTW at similar speeds) they felt and seemed faster than two cards that I got a lot of use out of in '09-'10, the 4850 and 4870. So I guess I kinda assumed (in error) that this meant that they might have been coming close to statistically matching 4890, which in turn is actually more a match for HTX 460 768 & 1gb, and GTX 465.

The 4890 is a beast and will smoke the 450. I upgraded from a 4890 to a 460gtx 1gb. I see a little improvement in real world perfomance in games. Nice, but nothing dramatic. The big difference has been in noise and temps. That's NICE.

My 4890 is a considerable amount faster than my friends 4870 rig, and my Sapphire ref. 4890 will max out at 960mhz on air (1050 or so on the memory.
And since im also at 1680x1050, it maxes out *almost* everything I have thrown at it (with exception for GTA and Mafia II).

I really think an AMD 4890 would smoke a GTS 450 to hell.

The GTS 450 isn't even in the same league as an AMD 4890.

4890 dude :)

GTS 450 is in the league of the 4850. OCed, it gets close to the 4870. Never in this world or in its dreams would a GTS 450 be in the same league as a 4890.

i see the 4890 being sold on craiglist anywhere between $175 - $200 (canadian) so $100 is a steal.

i game at 1920x1080 on a 4890 and it crushes almost everything except crysis.

Ditto. That's a super sweet deal if you don't mind dealing with the heat teh 4890 puts out. It performs close to a GTX 460 1GB.

The GTS 450 does overclock pretty well. But so does the 4890. In fact, the 4890 is typically a great overclocker and with a bump in voltage, is likely to see 1000Mhz on the core. When overclocked, the HD 4890 is neck and neck with GTX 285, right on the heels of GTX 460 and will even trade blows with HD 5850 depending on the game.
