4890 cf setups out there?

hey guys I was wondering how the 4890 cf is handling current titles like bfbc2, l4d2, codmw2 etc? As you can see in my rig I already have one and a decent cf mobo ready to go. The cards are a little scarce but I have access to one and was wondfering if its worth it.

One 4890 is still considered pretty fast, 2 will be enough to max out pretty much whatever you want to play. I see 4890's sell for 130ish all day on ebay :thumbup:

You should think about selling it though and upgrading to the newest gen cards (lower power consumption, dx11, eyefinity) while your 4890 still fetches a decent price :thumbup:
 
4890 cf should be faster than a single 5870 so it should slaughter the games you mentioned.
 
1 4890 would be enough to handle those games, so with 2 you should be good for a while. My old gtx 260 ran bfbc2 at full settings and max aa/af with no problems @ 1680x1050
 
I have 2x 4980's in a Xfire set up. Both of them are XFX's at stock clocks, and have been working fine for almost a year now I think. Got em' for around $160 a pop, which was quite the deal at the time!

Actual performance in most any of the games I've tried is great. I don't think I ever drop below 60fps given my settings (1080p, 2-4x FSAA, AA @ 4), I love it.

Had some issues running some games (ie. Battlefield Bad Company 2, Torchlight) but they were fixed with updates game application profiles within weeks or a month of release in each case. All the Valve games (ie. L4D, L4D2, HL, HL2, etc.) ran perfectly from day one.

For the most part Xfire has been pretty good to me, I've really been surprised at how smooth its ran, particularly after the latest Cat. updates. I dunno why there are so many horror stories about it... I could be lucky I guess but I have yet to hit the lotto, much less find a $20 on the ground so I kind've doubt it.

I do get the occasional BSOD/crash, but then I also overclock the CPU and RAM, and they're rare enough not to bother me. Maybe once or twice every other month? YMMV.
 
Plenty fast. I run everything at 1920x1200 max settings. Metro 2033 has a little slowdown from time to time, but nothing terrible, and I think that's the case for everyone but the 5870 CF / 5890 crowd in that game. Stalker: Call of Pripyat runs well. Everything else is smooth. I haven't bothered with checking FPS in quite a while, so I can't give specific numbers. I don't feel any slowdown, that's good enough for me. I don't play Crysis, I don't care about Crysis, so I can't give you any impressions there.

I had some issues with drivers refusing to install or recognize the setup early on (10.1 or thereabout) but they cleared up somewhere around 10.3 and 10.6 is treating me very well.

I would echo the others and suggest you sell your current 4890 now and pick up a single 5870 for DX11, while the 4890 is still worth anything. You might get a little lower FPS than 4890 Crossfire, but you'll get a better quality image in DX11 capable titles (I do miss tessellation sometimes) and lower power consumption / less heat. If my job starts treating me a little better shortly here I may pick up a 5870 for myself and sell both my 4890s to offset the cost.
 
Mmmm, I think its understandable to recommend OP sell his current 4890 and get a 5870 right now, but the 6xxx cards should be out around the end of the year (rumor mill keeps saying late Oct early Nov). Personally I'd hold off since that should be a bigger upgrade for the same cash in DX11 games with only a few months more wait time, plus it should have much better tessellation support over the current 5xxx series.
 
but wouldnt that decrease the value of my 4890? if I waited until the fall when these 6xxx cards come out?
 
It would yes, but as it stands now its tough to get more than $120 or so used for them. By year end you'd probably get $70 or so for it, but you'd get a much better card too. Supposedly the 6xxx series will be around 20% faster than the 5xxx cards. You'll probably be kicking yourself if you bought a 5870 now and sold your current one just to make $50 or so more.

Sure, you could sell that 5870 to try and make up the difference to get a 6xxx card, but you'll find the resale value of the card will probably get hammered more then the 4890's since its only the "new hotness" that gets the high prices.

Re-sale value on PC hardware is worse than cars, even for some the unusual and rare stuff.
 
Mine are crossfired. Runs those games real good. The framerates are smooth.
 
A pair of 4890's with my system's signature spec will *almost* max out Crysis on 1080p.

Using the default 64-bit Crysis GPU benchmark with all settings to Very High and 4xAA, the average result was 51 FPS.

I absolutely love how my pair of 4890's just lets me max out everything without having to compromise this-or-that setting. There are more powerful cards out there, but for the money and the performance they give, it's the best choice.
 
impo the value of the card wont drop that much when the 6xxxx comes outr because of the solid cards underneath it. I think I will sit pat for now seeing as it does all I ask of it now.
