Hi Everyone,
I think I've got a problem with my video card, a Radeon 4870XT that I've had for about 8 months or so.
I was on my computer last night, and it just all of a sudden turned off, almost like a power outage (with the exception that I did not lose power). So I turned my computer back on, thinking might've just glitched out, and it seems to be turning on fine, but I get no display on my monitor at all, and the video card fan is suddenly VERY loud.
I took the computer apart thinking maybe it was just dusty or some wires inadvertantly gotten misplaced (I don't know, grasping at straws here). Try it again, same deal. So i took out the card and turned it on, and it seemed to be fine, except the motherboard has no on-board video, so I can't see anything to tell if its working alright (this is how I confirmed it was the video card fan that was loud).
The power turns on as usual, the hard drive indicator flickers as it spins to life, and the mouse/keyboard lights come on, as if booting normally, however, I simply have no display and a very pissed off sounding video card.
I built the system about 8 months ago, and have never had a problem. I've got a 750W power supply that should have ample juice for the card (and the previous 8-months never indicated a problem), I had up to date drivers, and my system monitors never noticed heat spikes or abnormalities.
I am at a loss about what happened, but I suspect my video card has just died. Before I go and grab a new one, I was just hoping someone could offer their expert opinion on if this sounds like the usual suspect.
If the computer hadn't shut itself off and the problem happening directly after this, I'd write it off to a faulty video card, but the sudden power failure has me hesitant to just go pick up a new video card to try (I don't have an old around to give a try at the moment, unfortunately).
Thanks for your consideration.
