Greetings. This card locks up the 3D Benchmark Advantage
test when I run default GPU and memo clock speeds.

Heats no issue because its water cooled. My settings are
2650x1600 on a Dell 30" with x4 AA and x4 AF. Is that
pushing it for a 3D test?

I still have the Asus RE and the Q9650 running stock
@3GHz with 2x2gig of ram. I plan on bumping it to
4.1 GHz tonight and some other mobo tweaks.
Maybe this will help. Dunno.

Any thoughts?

Well if heat isn't an issue then the next one would be power, make sure your psu can handle it.

It could also be the ram or just a faulty card, try downloading something like ati-tool and using it's artifact test or another benchmark and see if you can repeat the lock-up.

Well, I back off the clock and memo settings on gpu
and it doesn't shut down but the 3D benchmarks
are horribly slow. I tried several drivers for it and
nothing. Whatever happened to plug and play?

Plug and play works for most people.

So if you underclock your card it doesn't lock up?

If that is a self installed water cooling system you sure it is working right?

Water works excellent. Runs around 30c at idle and 36c at
gameplay.

I had the card over clocked and then I went back to default
settings. It doesn't matter where I set this card, the frame rate
on the 3D Advantage benchmark drops a low as 7 fps on the
Jane Nash test. But it plays Unreal Tournament great.
Very weird. I'm not sure about 3D Mark but it comes highly
recommended for benching. I've got near six grand in this
dog and it barks like puppy. A lot of folks are cussing over
at the ATI forum on how bad the drivers are for this card.
I probably need to flash my Asus Rampage with the latest
bios and turn this q9650 3GHz processor up to at least
4GHz and tune the ram. I'm hoping this may solve the
problem. I'll be posting. -keith

If games run great then forget about 3dmark,

Do have any problems at all in games?

try install driver agian

Your tendency to hit a new line after x number of characters is strange, OP.

That said, I agree with oMek that unless you're using a well designed full coverage block VRM cooling may be the problem, at least with regard to crashes while OCed. Then again, depending on the extent of the OC you may actually be running in to voltage related issues, not power draw or heat related issues.

When I had a single 8000 GTX under water and temperatures similar to the ones you're reporting I could get up from 575Mhz core 1320Mhz shader to 682Mhz core 1600Mhz shader, but not higher. The 8800 GTX G80 core and clock generator are odd and move in "jumps" -- the next jump was to 702Mhz core (or 708, I can't recall) I would get an immediate black screen. In fact, at 682Mhz it would be stable for hours, at times even days, but then something would push it over the edge and I'd get a hard crash. I finally backed down to 678Mhz and it was perfectly stable. Just not enough core voltage at stock (and I did not want to volt mod) to keep running above 682Mhz.

3DMark Vantage is arguably the most horribly written in the 3DMark series to date... and that's saying something. It might be fun to look at the pretty pictures (and the Jane Nash bench looks horrible to me, for the most part, and runs so poorly on every piece of hardware I've ever had a chance to run it on that I wonder what could possibly be going on there that I'm not seeing) but in the end it's just a number. If your machine is stable while playing all your games and plays them well, that's all that matters.

On the other hand, due to the total lack of optimization (in my opinion) by Futuremark, Vantage /is/ extremely taxing. Especially given your resolution on a 30" LCD. 2650x1600 is hell to drive, even for a card as badass as the 4870X2. Some might even argue you should look in to a third GPU in the form of a 4870 1GB, but that is neither here nor there. Adding 4XAA to that makes it so much more challenging, you may not even realize. Keeping at 7 FPS and above is /impressive/ at those settings. Almost unheard-of in fact. I don't think you're going to see more than about 10 on the low end, even with a substantial overclock on the CPU and GPUs both.

I would strongly suggest you consult other 4870X2 / 30" LCD owners prior to blaming the "poor performance" on the card or any other part of your setup. Chances are it borders on record-setting and you just aren't expecting a slide show.

Also, either please include your system in your sig or type it out when starting a technical thread asking for help in the future. It simplifies things greatly.

Gaming is generally more fun than benching... though I've caught myself fighting for a higher 3DMark score before. I understand.

Thank you for thought on this. My block for this card is a full
coverage copper EK Water Block I bought from Frozen.
I installed this myself and am very detailed and careful
with what I did. I believe you are right about 3DMark.
Wasted 20 bucks I believe. Like I said, this thing games
awesomely. I haven't had a chance to play the ones that
matter as far as a testing my system like the game Crysis,
but the one I'm playing now, UnReal Tournament is stunning.
It did skip a little once in battle and the audio section skips every
time between chapters. Then again my windows slide show
hiccups too with very high rez photos. I think it could be a Vista
64bit thing. I also haven't flashed this mobo with the newest
bios either and everything is running stock. From what I've seen
my stock setting of 3GHz on this q9650 has the potential to
to do 4.5GHZ with water. Maybe this is the key I'm looking for.
Your insight is most appreciated. Thanks again for taking the
time to express your thoughts on this. -keith

Are you using an iphone or something?

Adding nothing to your problem it is just you post is an odd format.
