I just got my 4870x2 and I fired up Crysis a few times just to see how it would perform. Last night, I was experiencing some very strange white flashing, makin the game unplayable. I couldn't see anything really.

I alt-tabbed and I wanted to fire up GPU-z to check my temps but it said failed to install driver or something, (or maybe failed to initialize) - I am not sure. I am using the 8.52.6 Drivers. Do you think this is a driver related issue or would something be defective. I also notice strange white textures in the sky when running the timed benchmark on Very High.

I restarted my computer and everything was back to normal. So i've only seen anomalies twice, and have run the game several times in the past few days.

Also, how do I tell if both my gpu's are being utilized (I'm kind of paranoid about that - my first multi gpu solution).

Thanks in advance guys. I apologize if this topic has been covered already.

crysis sees all 4 of my gpus, just look at the console when you start the game it shows the hardware it finds/using

i had some issues with artifacts but only maxing out the overclock, you wont be able to push these cards as hard as single 4870's with the cooling solution

I haven't tried overclocking, I'm at stock speeds. Do you think it is a heat issue?

What is the best way to diagnose whether or not I would need to RMA a card? As in, to be sure this is a hardware related issue?

My 3dmark 06 and vantage run fine with no issues at all. Can run DMC4 benchmark and I can play GRID just fine as well.

With a defective card would artifacts appear across the board or is it a bit more complicated than that?

the fan scales up as temps go up, i use everest to monitor mine, never seen them hit 90

im using the drivers from the HIS website, not at home right now so not sure what version they are

Try running something stressful like Furmark and check temps.

is it possible to run this test and check temps at the same exact time?

I am using GPUz but doesn't seem like i can see the temps as I run. I looked up everest but doesn't seem like theres a free version except for Home edition which was last updated in 2005.

youd need to use on screen display option i think

i use the logitech g15 keyboard lcd display so i can watch all that stuff when im gaming and what not

On screen Display option .. do you mean for GPUz or Everest?

Which version of Everest do you use? the freeware one?

Everest

i have a purchased version, but they have a 30 day trial

It's almost definitely the 8.52 (8.8 beta) drivers. I see this exact same graphical issue and getting the "failed to install drivers" at times when running 3DMark Vantage -- after I reset it's completly fine.

Also, check your Catalyst Overdrive. Do you sometimes see 4 cards listed in the drop-down menu? Yea... these drivers need work.

I'd wait for the official 8.8 drivers before RMA. You're probably fine.

I see 4 cards because there is 4, 4870 gpus, you can tweak each one as you wish

however overclocking these gives very little improvements for the temperature tradeoff

It was strange... On the official 8.7 drivers, I saw the following:

4870
4870
4870
4870

On the 8.8b drivers, it varies between the following

4870 X2
4870 X2

-or-

4870 X2
4870 X2
4870 X2
4870 X2

There seems to be no rhyme or reason when I see two and when I see four 4870 X2s

I've got similar issues with crysis and COH. The witcher, Tf2, hl2, and UT3 seem to run fine though. I'm gonna test WiC tonight.

I'm showing
4870x2
4870x2
On my system, with 8.7 drivers.

I'm almost convinced it's only a driver issue, as COH runs but artifacts in the main menu then in game acts like the resolution is off, cant click on the minimap or menu.

Crysis in game works fine with some artifacts but the menu and resolution reverts to 800x600 on startup and has to be reset before playing. I know I could edit but shouldn't have to.

Last night I ran driver cleaner on ati and reinstalled the drvers 8.8. I also added some hofixes for vista64 but no luck. At this point I'm just hoping it's not a defective card and 8.8s will fix it?

how long do you run furmark for to be confident that it is stable?

I only ran it for a few min but noticed my temps went up to 88, didn't go much further though
