new here to [H] but had some questions about my 4870x2. I am able to overclock no problem up to 815-940 and it runs 3dmark vantage and Furmark fine, but my problem is not with overclocking it. It is with under clocking it, I know, but I want to try and save some power at idle so I planned on under clocking it to 375-500 which is the lowest possible core clock with Riva tuner. Now is there any benefits of doing such with it on idle. Any negative effects known? I know CCC will go down to 500 but no less so that is just making me question the 375 core clock.

I had 250 core and 280 RAM on ilde, no problemo, 24% fan speed 45c

4870x2

i think mine auto scaled back for idle/2d mode to like 300 if i recall, they only ramped up for 3d apps

Thanks guys just wanted to check and make sure it was okay to do so. I also noticed when i do that my Regulator voltage for both cores jumps from 12.75 to 16.75. Does this mean to it is using more voltage in the regulator to hold back voltage from the GPU cores? I do not understand why the regulator voltage would go up, when underclocking

because it's drawing less amperage i would assume.

my x2 only goes back to 507/532 i think.

Can anyone please tell me the Fan DbA ratings for the 4870x2. I have no idea, since I want to buy some case fans, but I do not know what my GPU fan dbA is since it is the loudest thing in my case.

Its like a vacuum cleaner. Keep an eye out for the Arctic Cooling Accelero 4870x2. That thing is supposed to keep a 4870x2 40c cooler than the stock one running nearly silent at maximum fan speed. It's expensive though, but totally worth it i think.

O I am so getting that when it comes out. It has been on "delay" for the last month and a half so far. Last I know from Accerlo is that it will be in warehouses in middle of May the Sales Rep told me. The price is like 65.00ish can not remember but I think it will be worth it. It will be able to cool that card great and allow for some more overclocking headroom, since the reference heatsink is good but when overclocking you have to ramp up the fan to keep it cool enough to your likings. Although I have had great luck with the card so far. I am able to bench at 815-940 and I game at 795-935 and have no problems. I have been able to set up a Dynamic fan setting thanks to Riddell(sp?) here and his great guide and it works great temp on core never gets higher than 84C and the memory 92C, and the fan speed runs anywhere from 34-58%(which is the highest I saw it yet)

So purchase your fans based around that cooler. Get as high flow as possible but as quiet as possible. I purchased a few scythe sflex's which push like 33cfm at 8db or something. Not the greatest airflow but good enough for my needs as quiet computing is very important to me. I know they have ones that are higher airflow at around 17db which is still pretty damn quiet. The only thing is they are quite expensive.

I have talked to others that have set theirs at 300 by editing the "Profiles.xml" located at "C:\Users\(Your Username)\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE" (Vista, if using XP you will have to look for it.) Change <Property name="Want_0" value="50700" /> to whatever speed you want for each core (in this example it is the default 507). Unfortunately I found it did not work correctly for me with both cores, but I think it is driver related, and some people claim it works ok for them. You can also create custom profiles and set them up differently in each profile. If it works for you it saves you from having to install additional software to set this.

which fan guide are you talking about? I hate that my 4870x2 jumps up to 100% fan speed for like 10 seconds and then drops back down. I'd rather it hit 50% for a longer period of time and be quieter...
