4870x2 power question

do you think i could run a 4870x2 on my seasonic s12+ 550 watt ps. my current specs are
Amd phenom 9600BE
1x160gb
1x320gb
1x200gb
2x 150 raptors
8800gtx
7x 120mm fans

18A on each of the 12v rails and there are 4 of them.

im about to pick one up today but i may wait if i have to get a new power supply. i think it might work but others are telling me to get a 650+ PS. thanks in advance for all/any advice
 
I run 4 hdds, dvd-drive, waterpump, q6600 overclocked, Sapphire 4870x2 and 4 gb ram on a Corsair 520HX with no apparent power problem so far. I think you'll be just fine with your PSU.
 
I do not recommend running a 550 for any great length of time with that set up, regardless of who the OEM is.

Really no need to tempt fate.
 
my 650 Toughpower seems to be having issues with it (will verify tomorrow) so I would have a hard time believing a 550w would be sufficient unless you are running 1 Green HDD, not many fans, and a stock clocked dual core.
 
Sometime down the road you may want to add something else , don't sell your self short on power;)
 
The X2 itself uses around 275w, give or take. Each of your hard disks uses 10w peak (50w total). The Phenom uses 110w total if all four cores are maxed. The motherboard, memory, optical drive and fans use about 50w peak.

TOTAL with 8800GTX: ~375w peak.

TOTAL with X2: ~500w peak.

You would almost certainly push the powersupply beyond spec. You're already making the thing sweat with the 8800GTX, but since it is a Seasonic you probably don't have issues at %75 load.

Seasonic makes top notch PSU:s. A 550w rated PSU will easily deliver 100% load (Corsair guarantees 100% load at 50 degrees celsius and they are Seasonic made). The only downside is that it will be much noisier at 100% load than a 1000w at 50% load.

A 650w Corsair can deliver up to 780w before overvoltage protection shuts it down. 100% is what it's rated for. Unless he games 24h/day or is sound sensitive while gaming I think he ought to save his cash.
 
That system even with an X2 will probably use around 425-450W at most. The 550W Seasonic will be able to handle the load easily.
 
I'd recommend the Corsair 620HX, it ran my single x2 just fine and can probably handle 2...but I wouldn't recommend it

This card pulls MASSIVE amp's. Look to see what your powersupply has for amps on the rails, forget the wattage.

My purepower (wasn't a toughpower) only had 18a 12v rails and it wasn't enough.

Because the computer is totally going to be run at 100% load daily :rolleyes:. The PSU will be able to sustain its rated load for a long period of time, although obviously running it maxed out continuously will put a lot of strain on its components. However, considering the idle power draw of that machine will probably be under 250W if not even less, burning out the PSU is not a concern in this situation.
 
So how long are you insinuating it's *ok* to run a psu at 100% load?
 
I don't know. I personally haven't done any testing of the sort. However, those would not be real-world conditions. Also, the Seasonic PSU is rated for 550W continuous load, so I would presume that it is capable of handling a 100% load for extended periods of time.

However, that debate is irrelevant at the moment anyway, considering the system in question wouldn't even be approaching 100% load on the PSU. Like I said in my first post here, it will most likely use less than 450W of power at full load, and that's a conservative estimate (the [H] test system is quite a bit beefier and used under 400W of power during their 4870X2 load testing). When you consider that, the actual risk of harming the PSU is pretty much nonexistant.

On the other hand, if one is surfing, then yes, I see no issue there.

If one can spend $550 on a video card, one can purchase a psu that isn't going to be thrown to the wolves during instances of gaming.

Running a 4870X2 in the OP's system will not even approach 550W of power usage when the PC is fully loaded. Therefore, loading the PSU to 100% is not a concern altogether. The argument that running a PSU at its rated load for a long time can cause damage is not applicable because that would not be the situation here. Look up some power usage numbers for systems that use 4870X2s and you'll see that they use significantly less than 550W of power, even in a high-end system.
 
I'm running one on a 600w Seasonic S12 without any problems. The system uses 425w when playing crysis with both e8400 (4.1ghz) cores at 100%. I was worried that the two 18 amp rails wouldn't be enough but they've come through.
