I have 4870x2 with dfi x48 ddr3 board and 2gb ocz 1333 platinum cl7. I tried to update ram to 4gb but when i powered up the system after switch the card ran fine for about a minute and then started to show vertical red lines even in bios. after restart wouldnt even show startup picture and when switcing to windows loading... logo screen the lcd outpu says that it is out of synch. What migh be the problem???
 
Well if this occurred right after a ram upgrade, have you tested the ram at all, run memtest, etc?

If you think it's overheating, the only thing that would really cause that would be dust buildup. It can't hurt it to give it a good dusting either way so you might as well.

You might try booting into safe mode and disabling aero, if your card is indeed overheating then using it to accelerate the desktop probably isn't the best idea. If you can get into windows use a program like GPUZ or MSI Afterburner to check your temps, if need be, use more aggressive fan settings.
 
The system loads fine i guess. The POST digits are set to normal running mode (FF). But i get no picture on restart when I have POST the build it shows bios screen with red lines distorted verticaly. It happens with the 2 x 1gb sticks to but i have to check it once more i dont remember switching all that stuff. Running now on 4870 and 2 x 1gb.
 
This is what i get when i have card installed. Is the memory dead on the card. Can this be fixed???

Did you check to make sure the 4870x2 fan is free to spin? If a cable accidentally got jammed into the fan and its not spinning it could be overheating and causing that.
 
The fan is spinning. I have powercolor 4870 running in the same slot no problem. It doesnt last to the windows desktop. The image gets lost soon. I can hear the fan getting on higher rpms. I am starting to get different mosaics. Will see in that different slot.
 
I resetead the videocard to the bottom slot. The fan from the PSU got it cool. When I logged on to XP I ran CCC and GPUZ. It showed 95 C. After reboot with proper drivers on manual fan control got it cooled to 50 C. Set back to auto and when it hit 70 mosaics atarted to show on the desktop. Cant run any stability benchmarks. The screen goes black.
I dissasembled the cooler. Got some dust beneath the fan. The fins from the blocs somewhat dusty but no big chuncks stuck in between them. The thermal pads were pulpy. Different from the ones say... GF5900xt which i could pick up easily. Its different temp also I know but still.. Would it make sense to buy Arctic Cooling 4870x2 cooler???
 
Add some thermal paste and try it again. I usually scrape off the tim to get a good contact.
 
I don't see why upgrading the ram would sussdenly cause a lot of dust to settle.
 
Sounds like it might be time to try that baking method w/the oven....

Contact sapphire and start the warranty process. You shouldn't have to deal with this, and you have another 4870 that will do you just fine.


On another note, try running it with the 2gb you used to have. See if the temps remain the same.
 
Arctic Cooling 4870x2 is a great investment to make if you can get it cheap and plan to keep your card for a lil while.
Heres a pic of my idle temps at 40% fan and its fairly quiet up to around 75% fan speed.

The same thing happened to my 4870x2. Yeah it's just the card overheating. I bought the Arctic Cooling cooler for this card and I haven't had any crashes during games or any lines showing up on my screen since. I don't remember what the temps were with the stock cooler, but after installing the new cooler, idle temps are now 46 C at default fan speed of 27%.

I have not measured what the temps are when gaming, but I can tell you I have not had one crash since. Also I did bake my card before I installed the Arctic Cooler. So I can't tell you if it's one or the other, but I'm guessing it was just the heat issue. So coming from someone with the same problem, if you want to keep that card, buy the Arctic Cooling 4870x2. Oh yeah, now the cooler doesn't sound like a jet engine which is another benefit.
 
Do you happen to know if the Artic Cooler for the 4870X2 is the same size as the original on the card ?
The reason I ask is that I am running a pair of these cards and as they are mounted one on top of the other, the bottom card would still be able to fit in bottom the pci-e slot......no point in getting super-dooper coolers to find I can't fit the 2nd card...:D
 
If I fit the x2 on the top slot i still have a lot of room between second x16 pcie link. First x16 is second from the top and the second is second from the bottom so three pci slots in between. The best I can do is run it in triple xfire. I am woirried about length. Good that antec 900 has slide in hard drive cage. It might not be pretty but...
Thank you all for advice I am pretty sure about it dust and I will buy accelero. Till then I will test it with stock cooler. Got to get 3M thermal pads.

I dont know it either but i have to take out vcard to acces ram slots. That is why I think now that DX58SO has good ram slot placement (if i remember right...)

I use the Arctic Cooler Accelero Xtreme 4870x2 and it is a godsend. My temperature has dropped drastically since I got it. The fan no longer goes to 100% when playing games, and is about 50% cooler than it was with the stock fan.

It sucks that you need it, but I fully endorse getting it. I run everything at max settings (2650x1600), and no heat issues anymore.
 
That's odd, apart from trine with AA I never set my fan speed higher than 40-45% for games. never needs to go to 100%. What games did you play that needed 100%?
