4870x2 noise when idle

hi guys im off to my exam and when im coming back im going to purchase this a rig that has been sort of hand picked for low noise.

however, i need the 4870x2's power but i worry that all the money spent on reducing noise will be wasted (unless i go water cooled eventually).

I do not mind noise during gameplay too much, but when idle it really needs to be pretty quiet (silent would be perfect). I know its a trade-off and i know noise is subjective but if you could please give me your thoughts on it when idle/normal tasks such as checking email and general use non-heavy use (and also when gaming would be useful - can you hear it through your headphones etc).

any help is much appreciated, thank you!
 
the 4870x2 is many things, but silent is not one of them. havent tried it with headphones on but at 50% fan speed, it's loud. at 100%, it's as loud as a hairdryer
 
i think it's around 20%, although nothing really gives me an accurate reading. GPU-Z doesn't report it correctly and CCC doesn't report it at all.

I bumped it up to 50%, which keeps it idle at about 59c. It's a bit louder than my 8800 gtx at 100% speed
 
pretty quiet at the stock speed of ~20%, but I wouldn't run it like that, it gets too hot.
 
you'd assume if stock is 20%, then it should be fine at 20% as long as you aren't overclocking.

even if ATI says it's fine, I'm not cool with a video card that's flesh-burning to the touch. also it may heat up the rest of my case...
 
the pair of mine are quite quiet on idle


gaming is the only time they get any louser than my case fans
