I am currently having a big problem with my Sapphire 4870X2. I installed a fresh Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1 and after installing the graphics drivers(Catalyst 8.8) i get no display after the little Vista load(instead of the small Vista splash logo i get a No video display from my monitor).
The drivers work in safe mode-i tried booting in that way and the resolution is 1280x1024 and the graphic card is recognized properly. But in normal Vista mode it does not want to cooperate. Also i have tried to switch between dvi outputs, tried different versions of the Catalyst(8.8 and the one that came with the board).
My setup:
Q9450@3.8GHz
Asus P5Q Deluxe(0803 bios)
2x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR2-1000
WD Velociraptor WD1500HLFS
Corsair 1000HX
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic

Well it seems the problems disappears when using the a DVI to VGA adapter and connecting the monitor by using a VGA cable.

Found problem: after Vista boot the board switches my resolution to something my display cannot cope. Vista loading sound is there just no image.
Oh and i found another terrible thing about this board: it squeals, in 3dmark06 or AtiTool 3d test. Is this a reason for RMA?

You mean the videocard makes a high-pitched sound? I had that with an ATI card a few years ago, although I could tolerate it. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but have you played a few games with it yet? If the problem persists, and you're sure it's the card and not something else in the system you could RMA to see if another card does the same.

I've heard of GTX 280 and 4870X2 doing this sometimes, it should not impact the performance of the card though, as far as I know. It depends a bit how sensitive you're to the sound. (With my old ATI card, I could tolerate the noise, but my friend found it absolutely terrible. The card worked perfectly for three years before I bought a new computer.)

Yes it does a high-pitched sound between 3dmark06 tests(when the screen is blank) and when testing with AtiTool. I did not yet try any games but logical would be that too will create the problem.
Also 3dmark Vantage is artifacting a lot and crashes my system.

Hmm, I'm not really familiar with videocards, but have you tried recording the temperature of your videocard during those tests like Vantage and 3DMark? (If that's possible) Also, artifacting/crashing should definitely not happen. It's possible the card overheats. Have you tried tweaking the fan speed of your card? I believe Hardocp had a very recent article about this.

I still encourage you to try out a game, just to see if the card artifacts during those applications as well. Also, if you wish, you could google or search on the net if there are any known conflicts or issues with your motherboard and the 4870X2. I think not, but it could be worth it to check it out.

The 8.8 drivers are the most recent ones?

Also, the issue with your resolution, did you manage to solve that or does your card still start up with a higher resolution?

I tried Furmark and it runs fine. Temps shouldnt be an issue,i put the fan at 50% to be sure, i think that should be enough.
No i didnt resolve the resolution problem, i am using vga right now. Also both AMD/ATI and Sapphire Tech havent still resolved my problem.
The noise issue is spread, you can find lots of people complaining about it and there is no sure solution to that, it seems that even when switching to another brand the squeal is there.
Counterstrike1.6 is ok,no squeal,no artifacts. But its old. Will try Stalker clear sky.

Well it seems that even if i select to boot with a low resolution the display goes blank with DVI. Also with VGA 3dmark06 after some time is making the system reboot.
I will try tomorrow with WinXP x64 maybe that is of any help.
