So I have been loving the card minus the heat being pumped out against the wall and back towards my legs.

One of the only issues I've had so far is with Crysis. I am playing at 1920x1200 no AA, DX9 Very high hack in Vista 64. Game started out running perfect! 50fps on average. Since yesterday a problem has developed; after about 30 seconds of play, or if I look through the iron sights/scope, the framerate literally cuts in half. Indoors it will be at 80fps and after zooming in through a scope, it stays at about 45fps. I played for about an hour yesterday and didn't have this problem, the game was buttery smooth. What the heck?

Next, Battlefield 2142 has been running great at 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF never dropping below 95fps. Yesterday everything was smooth sailing with a little bit of stuttering that eventually went away. Today whenever someone shot me or there was a grenade explosion or artillery strike nearby, the screen would ghost like being flash'ed in COD4.

What does this sound like to you guys? Anyone else having similar issues?

Sounds like overheating. You need more airflow in that case probably. Try putting a fan on the side of the 4870x2 and see if that helps out. I've been trying to improve temps with my air flow challenged rocketfish case.

My idle temps at first...I was seeing 71-74c. Replaced thermal paste with stg-1...idle temps still stay around 70c and I see even worse load temps. So I changed the paste out to as5...I'm still seeing 68c idle temps, and 83c when playing cod4, but it may improve once the as5 "cures." I remounted the side fan on the rocketfish that blows air right over the end of the gpu, and idle temps hover a bit lower...at 66c. This is all on auto settings mind you which has idle fan speed to 27 percent by default.

Changing the fan speed manually to 35 percent and my card will idle at 45c-49c....and load...maybe 74c in cod4. So the heat sink actually does a good job...I think the default idle fan speed is a bit too low. On the other hand I think the default idle fan speed could be adequate if you had a well ventilated case with good air flow, and descent ambient temps.

No way its overheating. Fan during the game is manually set to 75% and it never breaks about 70C. If I don't wait for the problem to occur over a matter of a minute or so, I can make it happen right when I get in game and zoom in. With the binoc's it drops even lower and never recovers.

Are you using 8.8 beta drivers? If your using the official 8.8 drivers, I found those to be extremely buggy.

using the 8.8 and 8.8 betas didnt give me any issues in crysis aside from when i have my memory clock too high

could be something to do with the hack your using to unlock the super high settings lol
im playing on very high just fine

8.8 Betas, Clean Vista installation, no overheating, very high hack by changing the config file's "high settings" to 4. I tried lowering every catalyst setting to performance or low and its still happening. When it seems to be working as intended, its simply amazing, close to 3x the speed of my 8800GTX, but when it starts slowing down, it is almost as slow.

I've had Vista 64-bit bluescreen on me after doing a remote desktop and coming back to my desktop to play a game using 8.8 final. I may give the 8.7's a shot as I didn't have these issues with 2 3870x2's in Crossfire on them.

I'll try it later tonight. I reformatted after an overclocking profile screwed my Vista installation, so I want to test test it out with these drivers again.

Before using the Binocs:

I am beginning to wonder if its the game patch that is causing the problem. Considering 1.2 makes the wheels on the trucks disappear, I am doubting Crytek's ability to improve upon the game.

I'm not going to spend another minute on it. Crysis isn't any fun, and I know my card can run it well (when the game isn't failing). There's no point in spending time on a solution to a game in which the AI is that incredibly stupid. I think they made the game so unoptimized on purpose just so its harder to kill the stupid AI. When its running at 50fps on very high, I can run into a KPA base like Rambo and kill every one of them without hiding or using the suit attributes, as most of the guys are just standing around looking at an inanimate object or their dead comrades.

Well Crytek isn't really working on Crysis anymore. They said that the 1.2 patch would be the last patch for it and that they had moved on.

Which is exactly why I won't bother with Warhead. Such great potential but failed execution, and likely no real changes for the expansion.

ill get it if 1) better on ATi Cards..4870 x2 2) ATI makes theres drivers better than crap so games will actually play :)

Bout to install CoD4 and STALKER and see if this card is worth or it....

Either way it looks sexier than my 8800 gtx in my case which in itself is a reason to keep the card :D

Every game I've played has been a dream on this card. Crysis worked well until the game slowed down from zooming in, and when the enemies started running into walls. I can't wait to try some more games!!!:D

I'll get Warhead if it shuts the "ya but does it run Crysis" parrots up and is optimized for ATI :). Something tells me Crytek has something up their sleeve for the multiplayer anti cheat protection which they hinted at before the Patching and support fell through.

They claimed Crysis would have native anti-cheat backed by Punkbuster for redundancy. Did that work? If you don't consider invisible flying players shooting nukes out faster than a machine gun can fire, then yeah. Crytek talks a big game, but never backs it up. I am sure their new release will be another Nvidia sponsored game that will "coincidentally" run better on the Nvidia solution.

Oh and don't forget the retarded AI. They haven't even mentioned the biggest glaring failure of the actual gameplay. They are going to need to revise the story line to make this game not suck. Something along the lines of "Mentally handicapped Koreans escape hospital and flee to remote island in the Pacific. Once there, they will be given guns and even have nanosuits (I forgot to mention how fucking retarded that was) to battle the evil Marines that are sent in to kill them before they awaken a ship full of mentally retarded aliens."

We will never know that since they pissed and moaned like little girls about rampant 'piracy' with their game and then days afterward announced that they would no longer be providing any more patches to fix or improve upon the game. They won't get another plug nickle from me I can assure you of that. I will be borrowing warhead from a friend after he is done with it. Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me.

Ok, I'm getting really annoyed with my 4870x2 here. First I had that issue with the video card losing signal towards my monitor. I got that fixed by updating my motherboard BIOS. And now I'm having this issue with my computer becoming unstable if I leave my computer idle for a few minutes. Issues are programs refusing to execute and then the whole thing freezes. Most likely an issue with the latest drivers. I rolled back to 8.7 and see what happens.

X2 FTL, As soon as my new PSU comes it's getting 1 last shot before I return it for 2 4850's or a 260 GTX (both that I have tested in my computer and both score about the same, OC'ed 260 GTX scoers about 500 points less in 3dmark06 than 2 stock 4850's in CF)

I am tired of this thing, I have never had such trouble with a card before and I've tried plenty of cards on release.

Ok, I'm fed up with my 4870x2, I'm just simply going to return it to where I purchased it. Never in my life have I had a video card that gave me so many problems. Stupid thing keeps freezing on me. I don't know, maybe Sapphire really sucks or whatever. I'm back to using my trusty 8800 GTS which has never failed me.

I've had mine for 24 hours and it's working like a charm. To me it sounds like you guys need different power supplies or try hooking it up differently to the power supply. I don't have any other devices on either of the power connections to my X2.

I've played some TF2, Crysis, GRID, Call of Juarez, STALKER, and a game of Defcon. All those games are running maxed at 2560x1600 with 4X or 8XAA except for Crysis. Crysis is DX9, 1920x1200 with 4Xaa all settings on high.

How did this turn into Crysis bashing? Yawn horse --->> dead ---->>> beaten. We get it already. Alot of people still looking forward to Warhead.

Why would you return a 4870 X2 for dual 4850's? If it doesn't turn out to be a power issue that would be no help at all. First off the 4870 X2 is faster and they use the same drivers. So any problems you are having with the 4870 X2 may still be present on the 4850 Crossfire setup. (Assuming power isn't the issue.)

Furthermore the 3D Mark 2006 scores don't mean a damn thing. They are abstract and do not translate to game performance at all. By your post it sounds like you are basing all your performance decisions on that one benchmark and I'm sorry to say, you picked the wrong benchmark to do that with.

I have had a mixed experience with the card. I've got Age of Conan running smoothly with it (took some tweaking) and Unreal Tournament III runs very well also. Call of Duty 4 is fairly choppy and I'm not sure why. FRAPS says everything is fine but I can tell that the game doesn't feel quite right. It just isn't smooth. I think Bigcactus is experiencing the same thing in Call of Duty 4.

Why would you not swap the card out with the retailer and try again? You could have a defective card if all the thing does is lock up on you.

Well it could be due to a lack of patience. Many, not all early adopters tend to be on the impatient side. If I had an X2 and was having issues, but saw that some others and reviewers werent, I would start thinking that something is wrong with my setup or my card.

I had an issue with CoD4 with my sig rig that sounds similar to Dan and BigCactus's problem. I turned on triple buffering in the nVidia Control Panel for CoD4 and that seemed to fix it. It's wasn't that bad, but there was a noticeable stutter in certain areas that didn't show up in FRAPS. Since turning that one, CoD4 runs like a dog on fire running from a nuclear explosion. Everything maxed out in game, 16xAA turned on in the CP and its averaging over a 100 FPS.

Maybe something similar can be adjusted with the 4870x2 drivers.

Because I have already run the 2 x 4850's in my sytem, as well as the 260 GTX and both ran ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

I did not base my results on just 3dmark06, it was just a quick reference. I put many hours into AoC, Grid, Vegas 2, COD4, etc.. and the performance difference between the 2 was negligible.

However I have tried many different drivers, clean OS install, etc and have had 0 luck with the 4870 X2.

I do have a new PSU on order to eliminate that as the problem, and if I put it in and everything works like it should, then Fantastic, maybe I will keep it, but I doubt it.

Normally I am patient, but the amount of problems this card is giving me is just unbelievable, toppled with the amount of problems I see others having, It is losing my interest fast. Especially knowing I can get a 260 GTX for $330 (overpriced from BB) that I can overclock the crap out of and have a solid system with Physx and a company that knows how to make drivers *shrug*. I was really excited about this card, but I am just getting fed up fast.

Is going for xp32 or Vista 32 bit out of the question ? I know, its a bummer, but maybe at this early time, the drivers are more optimized for 32bit. you could always dual boot beween the 2 if you find that a certain os is better for gaming.

What makes you say this? We're talking about a top of the line card designed for high end systems. I can't believe that the 64 bit 4870x2 drivers would be significantly behind the 32 bit version, at least I would hope.

That might be a bit of a stretch. Nvidia is a 4 out of 10 for drivers and ati maybe a 3. Neither one of them should be singing their praises when it comes to drivers.

Their drivers may not be a 10, but when I get a card from Nvidia (on release) it at least works, perfect? No of course not, but not NEARLY this many issues.

I shouldn't entirely blame drivers, I got 2 4850's release week and ran them in CF and it worked absolutely perfect. I am just bent out of shape because of how bad my experience is going with this card (X2).

Well 8800 gtx drivers were considerably behind anything related to Vista for the longest time and that card didnt come cheap either and was marketed as having full Vista compatibility at launch. Im just posting about what many gamers have observed not only with Ati, but also with NV hardware in relation to Os performance in games.

It may not be the issue that some are having, Im just offering a possibilty that might explain some of the inexplicable issues some have been having. Lets face the facts here. Overwhelmingly, reviewers have not had negative impressions. There are many users that dont have them iether. Why do others though have them ? Is it all down to drivers only ? Im not so sure.

i 2nd that. i spent almost $715 when the overclocked 8800 gtxs came out only to get pissed that every 5 minutes i would get a BSOD since the drivers were crap. And even so many months after launch, the drivers were still crap. 2 weeks ago when i updated to the new 177.xx they screwed everything up and started BSOD all the time. And so far, i haven't gotten any BSOD's from my 4870 x2.
