Hi guys,
anyone else seeing a 10 degree difference between the 2 GPUs? I'm getting some crashes, but it's better as I speed up the fan (yes, way too loud).

I'll idle at 48 on one chip, and 56-59 on the other when the fan is 80%. not sure what the temp is under load.

If you're certain that the card crashes less frequently as you increase the fan speed, you should RMA the card. It's designed to be stable at stock clocks without needing modifications to the fan speed.

Some temp disparity is normal, one GPU is much closer to the fan than the other so there's much more airflow over the first heatsink.
 
the 2nd chip to get cooled is getting hot air, so its going to be warmer

mine sit around 86-88 gaming (the hotter ones) but still totally stable

the fan scaling ati uses on my cards is fine, it rams up to 2500-2800 rpm gaming which isnt to bad unless you play games on mute, in window there pretty quiet on idle

my fan only hits 60-75% under load with the auto settings id look elsewhere for the issue unless its a bad card. possibly a power supply that cant keep up, most reviews ive seen recommend 700w for a single card, your using 650 , a power hungry nvidia chipset, and 6 hard drives, 4 of them being raptors

still within what ATI specs are, people need to realized what their "too hot" is not what ATI says it is, yes its warmer than cards of the past but we used to passively cool cpus and video cards at one time, i remember my voodoo banshee would burn your finger if you touched the heatsink its was a tiny 1.5"x1.5" passive tiny thin piece of aluminum with no fan, it ran fine.. if i had to guess at the temperature of that heat sink id guess over 100 deg C
 
I 've actually been surprised by the X2 stability. After tons of initial crashing due to what I believe was a poor driver installation, I have had no crashing issues even with the card lightly OC'd.

Idle between 64-67
Peak high 70's - 84

Its the most stable first impression I've I have ever had playing a heavily modded Oblivion, a game that will crash for just about any reason.
 
Side question. Just got my 4870x2

How do you tell the GPU temps. I look at the "ATI Overdrive" section..

It looks like I idle around the 70's and when I game it goes up into the 80's is that ok?
 
yep thats normal, i think it goes from the higher temp gpu


im using everest to monitor all 4..yes i know the flash shows off dust i cant even see :p

Thanks for the excellent post--it's really intuitive that as air flows along the length of the card, the "downwind" card will be hotter. (should have thought of that.)

Anyhow, the problem is dramatically better at higher fan speeds, and the card is running perfectly in less demanding games like Bioshock and WoW. So I don't think it's a power problem.

The room I'm in has my wife's computer and the two systems heat the place up bad. I think I have to seriously vent that room to get the temps down. If that doesn't help in the two games I see the problem (Crysis and HL2:Ep2) I might RMA the card. Thanks everyone!

try having a pair of 4870x2 cards, while gaming my corner area gets warm lol
 
I haven't had any crashes, even when I didn't turn the fan up, and it loaded at 90c. I don't think temperature is the problem...

I did however get crashes using the beta drivers, so I stuck to the ones on the CD
 
I am only seeing one temp in CCC? CPUID hardware monitor also only shows one temp... how are you guys seeing both temps?

Edit: Nevermind... getting 50C/65C idle temps Load temps were up to 83C on the hottest GPU.
 
Dosnt GPU-Z work now for 4870x2? It will show the PWM temps too...

;) have fun... Also if the temps are too high on the rear GPU nothing MX-2 wont fix trust me..

Note: the Below link was my Problem child...But By changing the GPUPaste to MX-2 and using the stock ram pads and PWM pads my card overclocks like crazy with stock cooler..@51c with 918//2200 this was my Max Air;).

The 4870x2 it almost the same except it has a better cooler with no middle sink..You will have simalar results.

Note: The HSstuds should not be a problem with 4870x2. I always check my cards .If i see any temps that may be suspect i tear them down and do a Paste change and any thing else it may need..

You can always RMA if not happy with temps ,, I like to get to the bottom of things and RMA is always my last resort..I also take care to not damage stock items if I even choose to use watercooling. Although most warranties dont cover using Waterblocks its nice to test a card 100% before you make the change to a waterBlock .

If it fails from HighTemps @stock and dont mind RMA's send it back.
