Hi. I have a Q9550 @ 4Ghz and a 4870X2 folding. I get about 3000PPD folding from the 4870X2 (and about an extra 2000 from the CPU). Is there anyway to get BOTH cores folding on the X2? I have Vista 64.

Any help would be appreciated!
 
Thanks!!! Now adding an extra 8000PPD with my 4870X2 :). Anyone know if overclocking the memory gives any advantage (I have read that it doesnt)? I have only overclocked the cores.

Also, with my Q9550, I have enabled big packets and seem to get an increase in PPD. Should I also enable advanced scientific methods?
 
Excellent :). May lower the memory clocks and increase the core clock even more. Aiming for the top 1000 (which I should get to soon).

Now folding with a Q6700 (using all 4 cores), a Q9550 at 4ghz (using 2 cores) and a 4870X2 @ 800Mhz core (and using the other 2 cores of the Q9550). All on 24/7 and not getting paid for by me.

I would not overclock anything on the GPU, when the next core is released for ATI ....
Same goes with the next nVidia Core ....
Will say more when / if i am permitted to by the beta team ....

The only problem I can see would be with errors/overheating. The hottest the GPU ever goes is 70C...

It has occurred in the recent past that Stanford released cores for new WUs that utilize additional transistors in a GPU in order to process the work more efficiently. This invariably will increase heat production and cause instability issues even with modest OC. I have no idea if that's what might be happening in the near future, only a guess. I haven't kept myself informed as much as I'd like about new developments, and no one in the beta testing team will disclose it, so we'll just have to wait and see.

^ I would imagine your running into the 511's. Those little buggers take forever to fold. ;)

Depending on the card, it could be anything from the fan to components on the card itself. Be careful if it's the fan. I've had two cards with dead fans in the past two months. One card didn't make it, while the other one required a complete cooler replacement. Folding is very hard on video cards, more wearing than with CPUs and the expected lifespan in greatly diminished.

That could be the difference in WU types. On my 8800GT cards, their production can vary between 3300PPD all the way to nearly 6000PPD. It really depends on the WU.
 
What would be a good (but cheap) graphics card to add to my work computer? An 8800GT for folding? AT the moment I am only getting 1800PPD from it :(

8800GT will get you a minimum of ~3000PPD on the slowest WUs with factory clocks. More with an OC. I can't recommend any card at the moment because I have only 8800GT cards and don't know what the production is like with other cards. Prices also seem to be on the increase in my area, don't know about other places. Moreover, current WUs are varying in PPD by huge amounts lately so the production seems to be all over the place.
 
8800GS 8800GT or the older 9600.. not the gimped version.. or if you can find a dirt cheap 9800GT id get that since it gives a little extra room on overclocking since you dont need to do the bios volt mod to get the 8800GT to 9800GT speeds..

Yeah, I noticed! My 4870X2 goes from 4000 minimum to 12000 maximum! Carzy!
