4870x2 driver question.

Greetings. When I loaded my OS Vista 64 Ultimate, I then
used the disk that came with my 4870x2 to install the drivers.
I believe the version was 8.8. Then I went to the ATI update
site and got the latest driver which is 8.11 for Vista. Am I
missing something else that needs to go with that? I've had
nothing but low frame rate reports coming from 3D Mark
Advance. I'm running 2560x1600 on this 30" Dell. It seems
to play Unreal Tournament well but Frap reports around
sixty frames and no more. All the settings are stock.
I though I could expect more from this card especially being
water cooled. I do understand I'm asking a lot with 2650x1600,
But I've seen much better results than mine.

So, I bought a driver cleaner from Driver Cleaner.Net. Did what
they said and cleaned everything saying ATI. The folks on the
forum said to make sure I got everything and I should do a reg
clean too. So I used CCleaner, Eusing, and COMODO.
Bad mistake! My OS is really screwed up now. I cant even
locate control panel and quite a few other things. Looks like
I need to do a fresh OS install.

So, the question is. When I do a fresh install, should I skip
the disk that came with the 4870x2 and go straight to the
ATI web sight and down load the latest version from there?
That way I don't have multiple drivers and conflicts?

I'm really struggling to get this card to perform like it should.
There's gotta be something I missing here. Thanks for any
suggestions that may be helpful. -keith

Just skip the disk and get the latest from the website. To update the driver, normally I would just uninstall the old driver, restart, install the latest driver and restart again.

ATI will release a new driver on 10th December so if you are scared to update your again, you could wait a few days to get the latest driver.

Thank you for your insight. I'll wait it out. In the mean time
I'll do a fresh OS install and get things ready. -keith

UT3 self fps limits(see below), you can change these values or just turn off the limiting feature if you wish, but I would suggest just leaving it alone if you want smooth game play. If you bump up the max fps you will start noticing shuttering in the game play.

From the UTEngine.ini

MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62
bClearAnimSetLinkupCachesOnLoadMap=TRUE

That was helpful and something I didn't know. So perhaps
I have good performance in this game, its just an in-game
limiting factor. Thanks! -keith
 
I tested UT3 after I got my 4870x2 and turned off the limiter, the game mostly ran at 170's fps but stuttered in some maps.

OK, I got that far but when it ask to save file it says something
to the order of "cant save, that name is already used".
So what do I name it and where does it go in what folder?

Um open the file in notepad and make the change, then close it and hit save when it asks.
 
also if you're seeing performance in games that seem to be stuck at 60fps, then you probably have v-sync forced from the catalyst control center. To disable, just open CCC go the the 3D section and then the tab that says "all settings", Under that look for the setting for "wait for vertical refresh." I always keep it set to "always off, unless application specifies." I think by default it's set to "always on." Anyway, just a little tidbit in case you didn't already know.
