Someone here will know....:D

So, does anyone know of a cooler that will fit my Gigabyte 4870X2's as I run them in CF
Now since they are bunched up tight together in the pci-e slots, the after market cooler can't be 'thicker' (thinner and more efficient would be good) than the original, so that I can fit two new coolers to both cards.

Does anyone know of a cooler that works better than the factory fitted one ?

The accelero cooler is the only aftermarket air cooler I know of at all, but they are very hard to find at this point and don't work well with two of them in CF obviously.

I think you'll have a hard time finding a replacement for the stock cooler.

Though if you properly dust the cooler often enough (dust can and will build up in the space between the two heatsinks that isn't easily removed with compressed air) and replace the stock thermal compound with something better, you can get a lot of life out of the stock heatsinks.
 
im in the same boat as you, and as mentioned i believe the Accelero Xtreme is the only real aftermarket cooler for the 4870x2. you wont be able to run it as its MASSIVE. not many companys ventured to make something because of the 2 gpu's, its very 1 off. to my knowledge watercooling is the only way to go to cool those beasts
 
Thanks for the replies..........I checked out the Extreme cooler, but of course as it is 'thicker....takes up 3 slots' I would only be able to fit to one card...the bottom one.
Also I notice that many users had broken cards after applying the cooler, but I think that has now been solved with longer mounting screws.

About once a month I take out the cards and give them a blow job with a can of air to stop the dust bunnies breeding....:D

It seems that 4870X2 coolers are not common since it is a dual GPU set up, and also it seems that I would not be able to fit two of them.
Playing say Crysis (when it works) I have to set the fans at 100% because one card gets hotter than the other.........noisey...yep, but as long as they hold the temps down I'll live with it.

Sometime I might buy a new card/cards, but don't know what to get.........I always bought Nvidia cards until my new build was at the same time as the 'killer' (back then...2008) cards were the 4870X2, so these are my first ATI cards.................but I digress....:eek:

Yeah I think it would be better for you to upgrade your video card. No rush though, the 6000 series is due out in a few months.

So I gather from this forum, but know nothing about them.........I am thinking of putting a tax rebate to work though, as long as I can do it on the quiet without the wife finding out...:D
 
does your 1 card run hotter then the other in all games? i noticed this too as i just recently added my 2nd 4870x2 and thought the guy sold me a fucked up card. i hope thats not the case and its just a common issue lol

i havent bought into the dx11 hype yet. i will most likely keep these cards until i can no longer run games on max setting/res.

from what i gathered about dx11, it still uses dx10 rendering, but a few things are different like tessellation and shadow rendering but well see what happens
 
The two GPUs on my slave card run about 10C hotter than the primary card most of the time. Also on each card the GPU closest to the rear of the case runs hotter.

I've always just figured that the bottom card was running hotter because it only has an inch or so clearance between it and the top card whereas the top card has nothing behind it and gets hit with air coming off the CPU cooler, etc. The GPU closer to the rear being hotter also makes sense since the air has already gone through one heatsink before it hits that 2nd heatsink.
 
ahh good stuff, thats exactly how mine is, about 10c in all conditions (idle/load) and its just the 1 gpu that does it, and i think its the one closer to the rear. 1 gpu from the first card runs hotter then the other 2, but is still 10c cooler then the one on the 2nd card

Not sure which card runs the hottest, but I believe it to be the bottom card, as GotNoRice figures, the top card has more space around it.
I keep and eye on the temps using the gadget 'GPU Observer' and have four of them running to show the temps on all 4 GPU's.
One of the uses I put my 2nd monitor to, with gadgets showing temps, CPU usage, drive space and other toys.........so I can see at a glance how things are doing whilst playing a game. I know software monitoring is not accurate, but at least it gives me a base line to work from.
Whatever game I play, before I load up, I always wind the fans up to 100%, that way I shouldn't suffer crashes if things get a bit toasty inside...:D

With my motherboard the two cards a jam packed against each other..............I did consider at one time moving the bottom card down to the 8X pci-e slot, but found it difficult to find a CF bridge that was long enough to reach the bottom card...............as long as they don't weld themselves together I should be ok....:)
