4870x2 and heat

I know a guy with a 4870x2 that is overheating. We disassembled it and are prepared to replace the paste on the core with some OCZ Freeze. We weren't goin to mess with the thermal pads on the memory, but the ones near the first core are fried. Has anyone else replaced these? I assume new pads are needed and paste would not be thick enough to replace them?
