4870x2 and hanging GPU utilization?

I know a few have ran into this and I only seem to have this issue with the official drivers. Has anyone found a fix for the gpu being stuck at some wierd load 32, 57, 82% usually for no reason at all on a fresh boot? I know going into a game and exiting back out seems to resolve the issue but its a pain to go into a game and leave it everytime I boot up. I am doing a fresh install next weekend when my V-Raptor shows up.

Yeah I have this problem too. Hopefully, ATI is aware of this and will fix this with the next set of Catalyst drivers. In the meantime, I have to launch a game and exit out in order to get it to 0%. :(

I use FurMark

http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

its much quicker to start that program fullscreen for 0.5s then press ESC than to run a game and exit.

and yes, it is quite annoying.

One more thing, for Crysis Warhead I have to run another 3d app like furmark after I play the game because it does not go back to normal. GPU-Z says its using 30amps.....after furmark, goes back to 12amp. Happens with Crysis Warhead and R6 Vegas 2 so far that I know.

Not sure why only some of us are having this issue. What OS are you guys running? I am Vista 64.

heh... we are all Vista 64bit.. I am on the official 8.9 also. What mobo you guys running?

I also noticed that most of the time my GPU utilization was lowish, somewhere between 40% and 70% usually. And then othertimes it would be 100%. I wasn't aware of this trick and it might of been possible those 100% times could of been after I had exited the game and restarted it.

This is pretty nice information to have if I could simply run Furmark real quick before playing a game to fix my GPU utilization issue! Not as nice as a fixed driver from ATI, but better than nothing.

I'll have to give this a try tonight to see if it works.

And yeah, I'm using Vista 64.

MSI P45 Platinum here.

Looks like the OS might be the culprit if we are all using Vista 64-bit with SP1 and official 8.9 drivers. :p

Well crap. I would be running 32bit accept for the memory limitations. Hopefully ATI is aware of the issue. I know the last two official releases had this problem but I have a beta 8.8 version that does not have this issue.

It's not a huge problem per se. It's just really annoying like having a bug bite right behind your knee.

It is stuck at this load even if just in windows and not in a particular game?

What are you guys using to monitor gpu load?

You can just use the Catalyst Control Center to monitor your GPU load/temps. Open it up and click on the Overdrive tab.

I got my new board and installed XP with 8.9 drivers and I still get the hanging GPU load on the 1st GPU. This is annoying.. Im close to returning this card for a GTX280. I did have an older beta 8.8 driver that gave me no issues like this. I need to find it. I know there were 2 different 8.8 betas and it was the first one that gave me no problems. Anyone know which release this was?

Comeon. This bug has no impact on the card and even if its idling at high temp there is no damage done due to high temp tolerance. Just don't open up the ccc and stare at your temps all day and you'll be much happier with the card ;)

eh.. its an annoying bug that causes my fan to run faster in my almost silent setup. Yeah.. I wish I had a GTX280 now. I am gonna dig for the driver I had that did not do this.

Ok, well I took back my 4870x2 for a GTX280. I am much happier. No issues at all and it idles at 53c! My fps are a bit lower but more stable.. less dips in FPS while gaming. I get about 1,500 points lower in 3dmark06. Dont think ill try a dual GPU card out ever again. My 4870 I had a while back ran great tho.

I think it's scary. I had this happen to me just the other day. Booted up Vista (64/sp1 cat 8.9) and noticed after 10 mins the case temp was skyrocketing. Turns out the card was stuck to full speed (750mhz) but was not upping the fan from the near-silent defaults. That's scary. Core temp on the card was 85+ and rising. When the card is actually in '3D mode' the fan comes on and keeps the temps down pretty well, so I can't think that having the card at 85C+ 24/7 is going to be good for my case temps, room temps, card solder junctions or power bill.

Plus, the stupid thing actually burned me when I tried to take it out. That can't be healthy for anything NEAR the card (like my firewire case cable which has a slot just above the card) either. I've never had any component run that hot.

It might be an annoying bug bite, but even those innocent mosquito bites can sometimes come with Dengue.

Yeah, when I got one mine this morning and it hit 88c I had enough and took it back. GTX280 seems better so far. Perfect in XP.. still got some bugs to work out in Vista but not sure if its the new mobo i got also.

OK, I'm officially sick of this high-GPU clock thing. I don't even play a game on it, it just boots up at full 3D clocks but low 2D fan speed. It's stupid to have the card at 85C 24/7 just idling on the desktop. If I start up a game and let it run for a minute then exit, it resets properly, but that's annoying to do every reboot. Running Furmark does not knock it back down, oddly..

Does anyone know if the 8.10 betas fix this? If not, is there any performance issue with reverting to 8.8 (which I don't recall seeing this with)?
