every once and a while, when I boot up (especially after driver install)

The screen is DARK, I can see everything but its like the brightness is turned almsot off.

A few times it was completely black.

usually a reboot fixes it, but any idea what the cause is?

See Post 7, gets more annoying.

Are you using Vista? I remember when I used Vista about a year ago, my screen would start up bright, with my X1950GT. There's a setting in ATI CCC under Color, "reactivate ATI color controls". Hit that, and see if it goes back to normal.

I am having so many problems with this card it is not even funny.

I am very tempted to swap it for 2 4850's or a 260 GTX today.

I know the problem could be my PSU, I have ordered a new one but even still it is causing other problems.(and I still don't think it should be outrunning my PSU)

My computer is getting what Ic an only refer to as lag spikes (mouse jumps) and I have had abs. no problems before this card. It also runs so damn hot (even at 55% fan) that it has brought my CPU temp up 3-5c at idle, which is ok, but now my CPU is hitting 70+c at load (orthos) which it never got above ~64c before.(never even saw 55c in any game).

I had 2 4850's int his running perfect as well as an extremely overclocked 260 GTX with abs no problems. This X2 is frustrating me to no end.

I may just have a defective card, who knows.

It is not the monitor, thanks for the useless post though.

So the saga continues:

I can play Rainbow Six: vegas 2, COD4, NFS: Pro Street all at max settings, no issues.

if I try to lanch Grid or AoC Fullscreen (works windowed...) I get instant reboot (no bsod or error).

Vantage also crashes if I try to launch it.

baffled.

Not sure it would help, looked at info for last bios update, nothing related to video and it was well before 4870 X2 release.

What drivers are you using John? If you got a 4870x2 you should put your drivers in your sig. I've experienced the same issue with the official 8.8s. Haven't had that issue with teh 8.8 betas.

My screen was also dark right after I installed the drivers. I rebooted and it hasn't been dark since. So, it has to be a driver bug.

I have it running on cd drivers, I have an MSI Neo2-FR (Intel p35) with the latest Bios, I updated it this morning, no change.

might want to fully uninstall and wipe your drivers

this happened to me before and i did just that, and everything's been fine

ive had a bunch of problems with my x2 also... Its finally starting to come around... But I ended up updating the mobo bios(for me that did help), all updates for the os--- updated any drivers i could.. So i knew it wasnt those things... One of the things that helped was i changed where my 6pin plug was plugged into... I thought you were supposed to put the 8 and 6 on the same rail(thermaltake1200) but when i put it on a differnt rail things started to work a bit better... Also-- try driver sweeper and do a safe start... Make sure you remove your old drivers(im sure you have but just saying it anyways)... Also -- did you adjust your screen for the new monitor? I know these are dumb things to ask but its some of those dumb things we all look over.... It sounds like it could be a heat issue too... Did you to the xml update to make sure your card is running @ 55% fan? or use expertool? Either way you should be good there.... I have my card @ 45% fan speed and its pretty quiet and idles @ about 50c and i dont have alot of air flow in my case.. people seem to have the best luck with 8.8beta.. sucks your having a hard time-- im sure youll figure it all out though..

I updated bios, all drivers, used sweeper to remove all ATI/Nvidia (after uninstalling) and ran it a few times to verify all was gone, rebooted, installed drivers from cd and they worked this time around. I used XML mod for fan @ 55%, GPU idles at 45c. Don't think it is heat (game doesn't even load up enough, and games like COD4 and Vegas 2 work perfect)

I had to use an adapter for the 8 pin (i didnt have one on my PSU, new one coming tues/wedn). The newegg adapter goes from 1 6 pin to an 8 pin (2 if you wanted....). I have them on seperate rails (1 normal 6 pin, 1 6 pin adapted to 8 pin).

Not sure what you mean by adjust screen, but it fits my monitor perfectly, running 1680x1050 @ 60hz on a 22.

I tried 8.8betas and 8.8 final with same results (actually 8.8 final was worse).

I'm pretty stuck, I really don't think it is the PSU but I have the new one coming anyway to verify, though I think it MAY fix the problem because of the adapter (maybe).

it's just VERY strange that it will load some games, and others cause it to reboot the SECOND any GPU is used. *shrug*

go under the color tab and reactivate ati setting button, something had mine adjusted from the default install, fixed the issue when i seen it on the old 8.7's
