Well i was planning to upgrade to a gtx 280 in a few days, BUT i just got an offer for a 4870 512mb for $90. I know this is a steal and I am getting it. I dont know if i should sell it for a bit more and get my 280 for $180? or keep it and see whats up my specs are:

q6600 at 1.5ghz (going to overclock when i get a better GFX card, prolly to 3.2)
Gigabyte GA-Ep45C-DS3R
4gb patriot pc6400 ram
corsair 750w PSU
samsung 2253lw (1680x1050)

the games i play most is GTA IV, grid, TF2, burnout paradise, and gonna pay new games when they come out.

I need advice

They've gotten so cheap lately from retail, so don't expect much more than you're paying for it. At any rate, at that resolution I don't really see the point of getting the GTX280; you probably won't notice the difference in most games. Just use the 4870 and instead consider upgrading when the next generation cards are out. And even then you'll still want to upgrade your monitor to really take advantage of a new card.

kinda sucks

Not really, you're essentially getting a top of the line video card (the gtx 280) for about 160-170 bucks once you sell the 4870 which is an amazing price considering the 275s go for around 220-230.

Raap, you got a very good point. i should just wait for the gtx 300 and the 5870's to come out then get a 4890 for 100 :D or a 280 for 140 :D

Well he did mention that he wanted to play GTAIV so the 512 version of the of the 4870 might not cut it. GTAIV is probably the most vRAM intensive game around so he would almost certainly benefit from the 280. But as a whole it probably is a better idea just to wait for the next-gen cards which come out in 2-3 months.

4870 is no slouch, I would use it until the next gen stuff comes out.

at that resolution you might not even need to upgrade, that's less pixels than 1600x1200, and that 4870 will rock that res pretty damned well.

280 is overkill for that resolution, in my opinion anyways.

yeah i had gotten anotehr 280 but i sold it and even with 1gb of ram, i couldnt completely max out gta iv

dude at 1.5ghz nothing is going to play worth a damn...

see how low you can run the power at stock clock speeds, you may be surprised.

@ 1.5 ghz that is slower than my x2 in anything that doesn't take advantage of the 4 cores...

I'm confused, stock for a q6600 is 2.4ghz? Maybe he has Speedstep on.

if you read above, i am going to overclock it to 3.2 when i get my new GFX card. my 8800gts 320 is crappy in my point of view and i dont even bother to play any games and since our electric build came out to over $250 this month, i decided to underclock it and use less fans and underclock the GFX card as well ;). but yeah i am going to overclock again LOL

I think he is underclocking to try to save power, but that is seriously crippling his system for gaming.

just run it stock clocks or even overclocked for gaming, and underclocked for everything else if it's to save power.

Even I run overclocked for gaming and under for everything else, but never run underclocked for gaming, that seriously handicaps you.

you are crippling your 8800gts with those clocks, you are bottlenecking your vidcard.

you will be bottle necking the 4870 even worse.

why on earth would you consider a 280 if you are worried about power usage?

I wouldn't be lol'ing, I think you are really screwing yourself for little reason.

whatever, you don't want help, you want to laugh at people who you think know less than you.

good luck, smart ass.

you don't have nearly the clue you think you do.

Running 1.5 instead of 2.4 won't make much of a difference in power usage. Just use Speedtep or C1E to slow it down while idling should be enough. Depending on the board, it may interfere when you overclock, but some have used it with success.

its just for now since i dont have a good GFX card. I am not laughing at anybody, i just wanted to try it out at 1.5ghz, but yeah its also with speedstep enabled when it was at 2.4. I might just put it back in stoc speeds since it runs 1.6 at idle at stock speeds.

When the CPU is doing nothing, it will downclock itself to 1.5GHz and that's fine. It won't affect your gaming performance or anything like that.
