4870 Problems

Hi yall,

I bought a used computer that already had a 4870 video card in it. I have several issues with the card. First thing, I noticed it has (2) 6-pin power slots but the PSU only has 1 6-pin adapter. Does this mean it is not getting its appropriate power requirements? I ask because sometimes when I turn the computer on, there is no video input on the monitor. Once in a blue moon it will but most the time it won't. Another issue, on bootup the fan is very very loud. It reminds me on the old Vantec tornado fan I used to have. I assume that during idle it is not as loud, but is it going to be that loud during gaming? Is this something I can change with the ATI control panel (turn the fan speed all the way down). If not, should I just replace it with a quieter 4850 or get some sort of quiet aftermarket cooling? Lastly, gaming at 1680x1050, a 4870 is > 4850, right? Or will I not notice it until I get to higher resolutions?

just about all cards spin up to max fan speeds at boot.(and then slow down, since it wasn't clear)

yes 4870 is better than 4850

you should buy an adapter and plug that other 6 pin in.
 
Yup....That's your problem right there! My computer that I just replaced has a HIS 4870 & it requires 2 6-Pin power from the PSU. Just get another 6-pin adaptor & hook it up. I'm shocked it would even boot-up w/ just one connection. What type of PSU is it?
 
Its a Thermaltake 700W. So what do I do about the fan noise? Will it only be that loud on initial bootup?
 
Yeah. It will slow down. It's only that loud for me for about 3-5s when I first turn the machine on, and for another burst just before it goes into Windows. At idle on the desktop, mine is virtually inaudible. Only when it gets stressed (in a game or whatever) will the fan spin up to keep the card cool.
 
The fan thing is normal, and can't be stopped. All modern video cards do it, my 4890 included.
