Hi all.

I just upgraded my old 8800GT (512mb) gfx to a 4870 (1gb) gfx.

Before the upgrade i had the following 3dmark06 benches.
Setup: E6600 + Asus P5B - Deluxe (p965 chipset) + 2x2 PC6400 DDR2 RAM
3dmark06 @ standard setup.

CPU: 2,4Ghz
Gfx 8800GT - 3Dmark06 10102

CPU: 3,0Ghz
Gfx 8800GT - 3Dmark06 11102

CPU: 3,6Ghz
Gfx 8800GT - 3Dmark06 11802

Now with the new 4870 i get:
CPU: 2,4Ghz
Gfx HD4870 - 3Dmark06 10500

CPU: 3,0Ghz
Gfx HD4870 - 3Dmark06 12400

CPU: 3,6Ghz
Gfx HD4870 - 3Dmark06 9800 ???

I must say the direct 3dmark improvement was abit of a dissapointment, but after i tried running crysis test i was able to get 38fps @ 1920*1200, adv settings at med but shaders at high and 2xAA.
And i remember not being able to play crysis with the 8800GT in more than 1680*1050 with no AA. So there is some improvement.

Anyways, my question is if anyone have any idear to why my game performance drops when i OC my system beyond 3Ghz?

I have done both CPU and memory tests @ 2,4 / 3,0 / 3,6 and it scales as it should, everything performs faster @ higher clock.

The only thing that drops is my game FPS

in crysis i go from 38fps to 26 if i OC from 3,0Ghz to 3,6Ghz.

Any help would be appriciated!

P.S. tried locking PCIE freq to 100, but that didn't help.

Can I ask how stable your system is at 3.6Ghz? Have you done long prime or Orthos runs both blend and small fft's? Can I ask what your power supply brand and wattage is? From some of what I have seen a score that goes down by a good deal from a high OC could be due to overall system instability.

Sure.

the 3,6 Ghz has passed 4h orthos, but only small FFT.

PSU is a crosair HW620W :)

I also thought it was due to instability at first, but why then does the 8800GT scale just fine?

Try some intelburntests, Do about 10-20 Runs and make sure its stable.

Another thing that can be causing this is heat, may i ask what your temps are (Gpu/Cpu) while @ 3.6ghz? As well as ram timings/speed at 3.6ghz.

Hi.

My temps after 4h of orthos is 63-64 on both cores.

When i run 3,6Ghz the ram is running 1:1 @ 400Mhz, RAM timings are manually set to the specified 4-4-4-12 by crusial @ 400Mhz

I will test with Intel burn test and let you know how it goes

Holy crap...

That intel burn test just slammed my temps up to >74 before i could stop it :D

I'll try finding a frequency where the intel burn test passes and stays sub 65 deg.

I will post results tomorrow :)

Atleast I have a possible 'Error' now.

Thanks.

Alrighte, I think I have narrowed it down abit.

It seems that whenever i OC my CPU above 3Ghz'ish my motherboard tosses 1 long beep and 3 short (Video card error) during BIOS boot, then it waits 5 sec and reports the std 'everyting is ok' beep and boots up normally (BIOS shows up on screen).

If this happens, I get about 1/2 fps of what i normally get in all games.

Im not quite sure what to do about it, never had the problem with the 8800GT.

Perhaps I should try checking if the PCI-E is still x16 when i get the error? (GPU-Z)

Tried upping the PCIE Voltage from 1,5 to 1,6 but that didn't work, and I didn't want to mess too much with that.

Worst case I'll just have to stay put @3Ghz.

Looks like you have a case of the ATI driver curse. This may not be the case but i've seen ATI drivers do all sorts of hookie things.

What's the actual break down of your score @ 3.6GHz? Anyway, its 3DMark, I wouldn't obsess over it.
