4870 issue or powersupply?

I replaced a 3870 with a 4870. that was the only change to a my systerm - which before that was working fine. Now I get lock ups in Left for Dead and City of Heroes and even the desktop. I was fine yesterday, played games most fo the day then last night full freeze, had to hard reboot, again full freeze same thing. Third reboot opened up catalyst to see if it was overclocked and it froze again (it was not at the time it was set to default.).


Is the 4870 that much more of a hog ?
 
um what psu do you have...

I have lock ups last couple days, i think it had been drivers though
 
I have an enermax 600 I think - I have three boxes and I think the enermax is in there - either that or an antec earthwatts 650. I have a pc power and coooling 750 I can put in there

rest of the system is as follows -

Q6600 @ 3.2
Gigabyte P35 Mobo
2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 @800 (2.1v)
2x 72gb raptors in raid 0
samsung dvdrw

nothing to fancy - had the 3870 which was single pci-e power go to the 4870 with duals (has to use one of the adapters for the second power slot) - boom lock ups. Only thing other than the video card is the latest cat drivers.
 
I havent heard good things about that brand PSU, i would get a corsair or antec...
 
I have a pc power and cooling 750 silencer that is [H] gold rated I can put in there. I was going to put it in my 9450 yorkie - this is my gaming rig and I can do it (i hate replacing power supplies :( )....just wanted other opinions - I mean the 3870 was not exactly a sipper when it came to power usage.
 
looks like it might be I dug around newegg and found some user reviews - one user complained going from a 7950gx2 to a 280 and he got lock ups and crashes. Looks like it did not produce enough juice under load.
 
it should be fine if Nvidia certified it. The simple test here is to swap out the power supply as you already have it and test it out. I would check the temps as well. all else fails reinstall the card

BTW new egg reviews are worthless.
 
please realize that not all psu's are made thae same, and I highly doubt ATI tested each of the PSU's that they certified for use.....
 
If you were playing for an entire day before the problems started materializing, then my bet would be on the card itself, not necessarily the PSU( although since you can test another one so easily, you obviously should ). First thing I'd try would be to just take the card out and reinstall it, if you haven't already.
