4870 Idle temp issues

Having some issues with idle temps and wondering if anyone had some insight.

Right now my 4870 is idling at 80C. I stress tested it for 15 minutes and it reaches 89C. Seems fine(ish) under load. Both are higher than I would like, but the delta between load and idle seems quite low to me. I tried cleaning out the fan and my case to make sure airflow wasn't an issue, but I didn't see any changes.

Not sure on the long term implications as far as the lifespan. I'm trying to hold off for a new card until the Kepler is out to see what that does to prices and options.
 
Your sensors maybe off. If you have the technical ability, I would recommend replaced the thermal compound with a ceramic, non conductive material. A good example of this would be OCZ Freeze or Cooler Master Thermal Fusion 400.

I would not recommend anything metallic because applying new thermal compound to a GPU is a different beast than a CPU.
