4870 + gigabyte problem

Here are my specs:
q9550
asus 4870
gigabyte x48-ds4
samsung 226bw
windows xp pro sp3

So, occasionally when I reboot I get a blank screen right after Windows XP and the copyright on the bottom, it won't load past that, it will just go blank my screen. I installed the driver off asus' website at first. Then I installed the catalyst driver, had the same problem. So I rebooted into safe mode, uninstalled catalyst, then rebooted and works fine without any drivers installed. My bios is from 03/21/2008. I'm not sure what the problem is though. Anyone experience this?
 
I had that problem with a 4850 and a Gigabyte P35 board a while ago, try flashing a new BIOS on the motherboard. Don't know why, but installing drivers made them incompatible at first.
