playing with overclocking a 4870 right now. How hot would be too hot for this card?

Have a sapphire 4870 1gb at 840/1000 right now running 81c on full load. Might push to 850 since this is stable running folding.

edit:bah, bluescreened with a machine check exception at 850.

i dont know if ive heard of many temps higher the 80 degrees or so and staying stable but im sure others will comment on that.

thats perfectly fine at full load. mine gets up to 85c after 20min of furmark at 815/1000

Modern GPUs on stock heatsinks are generally designed to hit up to 90C. It's hot, but there's nothing you can do about it short of either getting an aftermarket solution or cranking up the fan until it's so loud that it wakes the dead.

90? video cards can take 100*C and not die for extended periods of time, if they do, just RMA them.

i have dual 4870s in a HTPC case. The computer case would be scorching to the touch and freeze up often, so i cut 2 120mm holes above the video cards and put 2 120mm fans there to feed air to the cards. Now the temps stay between 48c and 60c for the 4870s :D
