4870 + 4850 CFX?

Will this be a good set-up. I have a 4870 already, and going to get a i7 nehalem setup soon. Since SLI/CFX really benefit from intel's new microarchitecture, I might as well give dual GPU another shot (after the big disappointment with 7800GT SLI)?
 
Well, you will get a performance increase. But it would be much better to go with another 4870.
 
if your planning on buying both cards at the same time your basically only gonna get 4850 xfire performance so you mightaswell save the money and buy 2 4850's or spend more for 2 4870's buying a uneven set of cards at the same time will only yield lower card results in xfire terms
 
This is a good question, I have a 4870 in my main and a 4850 in my secondary. If I get Crossfire compatible board, I've wonder if it'll work out well. Or just stick with my Nvidia motherboard and get an X2 (4850X2 or 4870x2)
 
I have had both SLi and CrossfireX.

I had 4870s in CFX, 3870s inCFX,4870X2 + 4870 and now 4870X2s in CFX.
Frankly, Crossfire is not as scalable as SLi in my experience.
I had SLI from the 6800 Ultra on up to 8800 GTX in Triple SLi.

As I underestand it, if you place a 4870 and a 4850 you will get only the slowest performer as a denominator.

If you are going X58 and want the best performance, I'd go SLi. Once the new wears off Corei7 I'm going to give my X2s the benefit of the doubt, but I think I'm going back to SLi.

Question though, where did you hear that i7 is going to be a "benefit" to multi GPUs versus the current Core2Dou and Quad????

Then why do most benchmarks show CF scaling better than SLI in most instances?

what he said, and the benchmarks in the post above. a 4870+4850 crossfire is really a 4850 crossfire.

Nehalem performs about the same as Penryn with crossfire, but better with quadfire and SLI/3way-SLI.

I guess 4870+4850 is like pouring money down the drain when it performs worse than 4850 cf.

Now I am thinking, should I pick up another 4870 (on Black Friday most likely) and cf them in my future i7 rig or just wait for the next new card (summer 09?) ? I game on 1920 x 1200, AA is not that important to me, I can't tell the difference between screenshots of 4x AA vs 8x AA, let alone in motion, but it's always good to have. Also I am a a little bit worry about my 4870 512mb lack of vram.
 
Just wait a couple of weeks and get a 2nd 4870. Only another $100 or so, and you will have less problems and better performance.
