It's already out. It's called the 9800 GX2. If they don't make a 4850 X2 with 1 GB of memory per GPU, you may as well get a GX2. If they actually do come out with one, you know it won't be a 2 GB card.
lmao, wtf?

512 MB of framebuffer in a multi-GPU set-up isn't enough in my opinion. Why would one spend 300+ dollars on a HD 4850 X2, anyway? It makes no sense. You may as well get a GX2 for 250.
I just read some of the benchmarks of Crossfire Hd 4850s vs GX2...they are neck and neck.
1. Manufacturers always add more mem to everything. Look at the 8500 1GB or was it 2GBA 4850X2 is better for many reasons.
-Of course the 4850X2 will be a 1GB per GPU card. The 4850's are using 1GB of VRAM now, why would the more expensive part use less memory (per GPU)?
-A 4850X2 would benefit from the driver optimizations ATI has done for the 4870X2. Nvidia haven't done the same level of optimization for SLI, since their high-end videocards do not depend on SLI scaling, and not causing problems. For Nvidia, SLI is just a gimmick, while Crossfire is an important part of ATI's high-end videocard strategy. If anything, too good SLI support for the GX2 would hurt Nvidia's sales of GTX260/280 cards..
-It wouldn't suffer from micro-stutters either, like the GX2 does. This means better scaling and better performance in most popular games (except Crysis). The GTX280 and GX2 are also neck to neck but it isn't about the raw framerate, it's about having a consistent framerate with no stutters.
4850x2 would not be worth it. I don't think ATI should even bother releasing the 4850x2. You'd have a better overrall gaming experience with a 4870 with 1GB of VRAM than two 4850s with 512mb VRAM.
GX2 beats the GTX 280 in many benchmarks. Which would you rather have?

GTX 280.
- Less heat.
- Less power consumption.
- Newer tech.
- Can be acquired for almost the same price (if you play your cards right).
- Less driver issues.
- No microstuttering issues.

Crossfire <> SLI .
Last I checked the 4850X2 was going to be 2GB of GDDR3, 1GB for each GPU.I don't agree with it. I'm not a sheep that listens to everything [H] says. I think multi-GPU set-ups need more than 512 Mb of RAM per GPU to be effective. That's from my experience.

Considering 1GB 4850's are ~$180 AR (cheapest I could find), this card would need to be priced at about $350 to be competitive. I don't think there's any way they could keep the 4870 1GB's at ~$300 like they are now. Prices would probably have to drop so that 48701GB's are <$270 and 4870 512MB are <$225 for the whole series to follow a decent price/performance curve. If that's the case...i'm all for it. As long is the price is decent.![]()
every slide from a few weeks ago said it was a 2gb card and the price would be $399. that price doesnt sound all that great now that 4850 has went down so much in price. price will probably be lowered in a week or two after it comes out once the early adopters overpay. If that's the case...i'm all for it. I don't buy the Crossfire > SLI thing...because you read nothing but complaints about Crossfire on various forums, incl. [H]. And i've had SLI...it's okay...but once you start overflowing your 512 MB framebuffer limit with high textures, AA, etc....games start to suffer over a period of hours.

He's a sheep, remember? You know... Because tech engineering never advances. Because when you go from 70 fps to 141 fps... something's wrong.

Just one fine example :Which games does the 4850 in crossfire not scale well. And if you say crysis or warhead, you sir are a HW.
This is a very nice post. I like it, It's just missing an inkiling of proof or linkage to back it up....A 4850X2 is better for many reasons.

1)Proof? Anywhere that the GPU still exists on AMD's road map? and that if it exists it will be using 1GB memory? Just a small reminder that 1GB 48XX parts have only shown up in the wild just recently. And if AMD release a 300$ 4850X2 they rape their own 1GB 4870 parts at the same price point.

didn't even test the 4850 by itself, and they had only 33 fps on crossfire.
You just missed My point, but thanksI just feel that you were misinformed by a bad source
