Just watching the AMD Live meeting for solution providers and this is one of the screens. Looks like a price above $350.00.

I was in a meeting so I am just in on the tail end of the conference. But $350 is a bit high for me.

edit: Ok so I just asked the question on release date and they answered that Sapphire is their leader with the soft launch now and it should hit Etailers in a week to 10 days with retail price of $399.99 :eek:
 
Yeah its a tough card to price. If they move it down they move to close to the 4870 but they won't sell any if they move the price up
 
I think it's priced correctly. Now consumers will have to decide if the 1GB 4870 is enough at about $140 less, or if the 2GB 4870x2 is worth it at ~$130 more.
 
It's probably the right price. Granted you can get two 4850's for ~$275 or the two of the 1GB version for ~ $350, Crossfire is cheaper, but the 4850X2 can justify its price based on convenience and compatibility. It'll be interesting to see how sales go, that's for sure.

I'm not picking on you, just using you as an example here - that argument is frequently made but unless you already have a CF-capable motherboard, the cost of purchasing one in addition to a pair of 4850s w/512MB will even out the price, and you're still only getting half the RAM that you get with the X2. $399 should be cheaper than Mobo + 2x 4850 1GB.

Besides, $399 is just an MSRP. I'm sure we'll see prices in the $330-$350 range after IR and MIR with the holidays coming up.

That's more or less what I meant by "convenience." The ~$50 more that the 4850X2 MSRP is over the two 4850 1GB's isn't going to get you a decent Crossfire motherboard if you don't already have one, so it'll open up a multi-GPU solution to a wider base of users.

call me a n00b on CF, but for the 4850x2, does your mobo need to support CF?

That's well stated. With 4870's moving into the mid $2xx price range that's a tough call. Most who would spend $400 would spend the extra $100 for the 4870x2.

Well, for me, just with any other card, it'll come down to benchmarks and price. As of right now, neither one is known.

I was also wondering, does this card having 2 GPUs on it cause any issues? I know there are some games that do not scale well with crossfire/SLI. Does the same apply to a single card with 2 chips on it?

Also quite reasonable. I definitely would consider spending $100 more to get the best possible consumer card, even if it is slightly overkill for my needs. That way, it leaves plenty of room for future upgrades and such. People will weigh their options (speed, performance, GDDR3 vs. GDDR5, etc). If you really won't be using the 4870x2's full power, then perhaps the 4850x2 is the next best option for that price range.
 
it seems to me that video card companies play a game: nvidia takes king for some time then AMD does. Its like a switch for almost every generation and since its almost like an oligarchy, they can set prices at any time.

There was true oligarchical competition in action when the HD 4800 series was released.


When nVidia immediately dropped the price $100-$150 per GTX 200 series unit and forced their major board partners to partially refund money to buyers...it was all apart of the plan. ;)


There's no way the $399 price will hold for long. $325-$350 is the sweet spot for this kind of card right now. Let's put it this way...I wouldn't pay $399 for it. I might bite for $300 or $325, though...

A card is always initially priced higher than it's sweet spot, to see how well it sells and to analyze the supply/demand trends. After some time, the price will naturally fall.
