According to this article from fudzilla, there is going to also be an 4850x2 with 2gb:

The top of called Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB will have 2GB of GDDR5, the runner up is the Radeon HD 4850 X2 with 2GB of GDDR3.

If this turns out to be true, what will the price map of ATI's cards look like?

4850: $199
4870: $299
4850x2: ?
4870x2: ?

i am thinking the 4850 X2 will go for 399.....which looks good to me

so for now we have
hd 4850x2 1gb ~ $399
hd 4850x2 2gbs ~ ?

hd 4870x2 1gb ~ $499
hd 4870x2 2 gb ~ ?
And ofcourse palit being palit might make a hd 4870x2 4 gb edition just because they like to redo most cards by nv with x2 memory.

If both GPUs on these cards are supposed to be able to share the same memory, I don't see why on earth 2GB of memory would be needed. Surely 1GB is far and away enough (more than enough) for the next few years' worth of games?

If 1 4850 = $199, then a 4850X2 = $399

If 1 4870 = $299, then a 4870X2 would have to equal $599.

However, it is not always up to theory, so I would have to say:

4850X2 = $379
4870X2 = $549

A lot of early reports say the 4870x2 2gb will be $499. It's still early so who knows. But I don't think that it has to necessarily double in price just because it's an X2. The 4850X2 is double the price of a 4850 b/c it will certainly be better than a single 4870 which is $299.

So long as you've got the slots, it should work just fine. And I noticed that you have the same motherboard I do, meaning that you could throw one of your 4870s in there with a 4870X2, and it should work just fine. And that's why I love Crossfire. =)

Does anyone have specific information about whether the 2GB is fully accessible by each gpu, or if it's the same as the 3870 X2, i.e. the card is actually a 4870 x2 / 1GB x2?

The supposed pics of the RV700 floating around make me inclined to think it's 1GB x2 based on the PCB arrangement, though it's possible the bridge chip facilitates direct memory access.

I think the 4850X2 will be somewhat cheaper than $400 as two HD 4850 will cost less $400 upon release, especially with the rebates.

2Gb???

What the hell, theres nothing to indicate we need more than 512Mb right now (see the 512mb thread in this forum)

We may need 1Gb in the near future, but 2Gb?!?

Well it's only really 1GB..... unless ati comes up with a way for the 48x0 X2 to share the vram... which they're rumored to be doing. Then again, if every rumor turned out to be true I'd be rich! :D
