Hey, I was wondering what video card I should get. On one hand I have a good 8800gs that has done me well. But I just got a nice 22 sammy and now have my res at 1920x1080 and now the performace has dipped. I was wondering which card to go with. I know they both are great cards for the money and each beats the other in certain games.

As i've said, I play at 1920x1080 and right now have a 8800gs. I'm looking for performance vs buck with these two cards. My situation is that I play mostly steam or source games, want to try crysis and use 2-4 aa. I was wondering which is better.

I am looking for a 140 sub card.

edit: I would also like to know a estimate of the improvement in fps there would be. That would really please me.

Thanks!

The 4850 and 9800GTX+ are tied on performance, trading blows depending on the game.

The 9800GTX+ has recently been rebranded to the GTS 250, which performs the same, has a shorter board, and requires only one 6-pin PCI-E power connector.

On newegg today, the 4850 can be found for as low as $100, and both the 9800GTX+ and GTS 250 can be found for as low as $115.

In either case, the improvement over an 8800GS would be significant.

Since your budget is $140, you may want to consider a 4870 512MB - there are several of them available for that price. nVidia's next better card, the GTX 260, doesn't get below $165 at the moment so it misses your budget.

well considering this is one of the most common questions asked on here a forum search not to mention a google search would turn up shit tons of reviews and comparisons.

your actual performance difference will also be determined by the rest of your system. at 1920 I would not get a 512mb card at this point. a 4870 1gb or gtx260 would be your best options at that res so spend a little more. you are not going to come close to running Crysis on max settings at 1920x1200 with 2 to 4x AA with any card close to your budget.

Thanks! Lots of great info. But when it boils down which would you prefer in my situation? I dont think I really need a card beyond these for now. Also I seached Newegg for 4870 and only found 2, with one a rebate from Asus.

:p

Edit: Thanks cannondale06 and jefferdo for the help.

For some people, when they say they have a budget of $140, they mean that's all the money they have on hand to make a purchase. That 260 is a decent deal, but if he had $200 to spend up front I would imagine he would have said his budget was $200. Sure he might get some money back with rebates, but if he doesn't have the extra $60 the point is moot.

But yeah, if you want to play Crysis at 1920x1080 you're going to need a much beefier card than either the 4850 or 9800GTX+. However, if you're willing to bump your res down to the 16xx range, either should do you fine. I currently run a 4850, and I play pretty much all games at 1920x1200. The only two games I've had to bump my resolution down to 1680x1050 for are GTA IV and Crysis.
