Would you guys say both of these pretty much require the same amount of power? There are so many variations online. I've looked at Anand's GPU bench but he doesn't have 4850 listed as one of the choices.

Anyone have any ideas? Trying to run this card on an old Shuttle with 400w or 500w PSU.

What else is in the system? Remember the renumbering of the Radeon series. The 4800 and the 7800 are not in the same retail performance tier. A 500W could probably do it. But I don.'t know what else is in the box.

Black Edition 5000+ OC'd to 2.8Ghz, 6GB ram, DVD-R and 1 7200HDD.

BTW: I've been running the 4850 flawlessly since it came out so system is stable. Just trying to find the best graphics card that it can run. It's a SilentX 400w (PFC).

You should be fine. 7850 actually draws slightly less power than 4850 at load. Both cards only have one 6 pin PCI-e connector, so the maximum power draw cannot exceed 150w, average load should be about 100w

Your CPU will be a hard bottleneck for that GPU.

I had x2 5000+ O.C'ed to 3ghz and my old 9600gt did not even work above %70 ever...

U need atleast a phenom II or something...

Bullshit, I ran a 8800gt and it over 70% with cod4 and the CPU was at stock clock speed. It will bottleneck the 7850 but a 9600gt? Get out of here now

I need to upgrade this hd4870 this year some time, looks like the 7850 will do the trick on my 430 Watt psu

Why so furious?

It will sure depend on game to game, but my fps doubled when i upgraded from 5000+ to Phenom II 955 even i doubled the quality settings in some games... Tell me this is not the CPU than anything else? still with the 9600gt btw... and @1080p resolution...

Yeah you jumped to a newer tech, added 2 cores and 600 MHz on your stock clock speed. A shit CPU is a shit CPU lol. I said bullshit because I gamed fine with that CPU and a 8800gt and was over 70% gpu usage at 2.6ghz stock clock speed. I highly doubt you doubled your settings too. If the 9600gt was at such low usage you could of cranked AA and raised your usage

For the most part i am talking about a shit graphics game with low demanding engine named Heroes of Newerth... However, it does not matter if i lowered or increased the quality settings on the old cpu, was still sailing around 40fps... The GPU usage ofcourse was higher with higher settings.

The thing is, i now play at 80+fps with just the CPU upgrade, 2 cores cache etc whatever. The 5000+ still is not enough for the full capacity of 9600gt or your 8800gt... that is my point...

Curious what resolution were you running because it sounds low

See I game at 1366x768 and the way you described the settings changing and performance not changing sounded familiar. That game must be really gpu weak if your usage was so low at 1080 p

I remember being able to play any game at the time the 8800gts 512 came out, with uses the newer g92 core. The 9600gt should be able to run it on high/med mixed. Crysis at 1080 needed two cards (which I had in sli) to run buttery smooth. Those drivers were so good :(
