4850 overclocking sucks

when you overclocked the 8800gt that high, what did you set the memory to?

look into voltage mods, you've got thermal room to spare but you're limited by the default voltage.
 
From what i heard the visiontech 4850 are volted lower in the bios then a few other brands, may look for a tuner that can increase the voltage a little.
 
Picked up a Visiontek 4850 yesterday. Had it running at 700/2200 this morning on stock cooling and no artifacts in ATI Tool after about an hour of stress testing.

As with most OCing it's luck of the draw, but as with you I don't really need the extra power.

You are in the same boat as me in the cpu department.I got the card knowing it can hold me over for a while until I get money saved up for a new build
 
I oc'ed mine to 700mhz when running 3D (~12% overclock) and upped the voltage in bios to about 1.2v.
 
I'm on ref. cooler with 700/1210 lol 80c full load @ 65% fan (I use headphones when gaming :p)
 
Sorry about your luck, but you're never guaranteed 1mhz higher than stock anyway. It's just chance.
 
I have a sapphire that can't hit 700 on the core. You're not alone.

There are no "new" versions of ATItool unfortunatly. Development for that utility is VERY slow. Try ATI Tray Tools instead.

That's true. Same with video cards as it is with CPUs. No guarantees in the OC business...some cards are better than others.
 
was able to get mine up to 680 core on stock volts. pencil modded with stock cooling got me to 750 on stock cooling pushing 85-90 temps stable for a good 2 months no issues using ati tray tools instead of ccc. now i upgraded cooling on my card to a gfx chilla like yourself and am sitting comfortably at 800 core with much lower temps.

guess i was fortunate i bet with a little volt modding you could get to 700-720 but i recommend a DMM before you do any of that and ymmv.

I will leave it be,no need to mess with the bios.If the card bricks when I flash it with the new bios then I am screwed,no thanks
 
i bricked my 4850 initially but i had a spare card so i could still force flash it. there are very helpful guides out there on what to do if that hapens. i never messed with vid cards so much this go round, but i learned alot.

i am just curious, what voltage did you set to get your card to 750Mhz?

mine runs 750MHz with 1.3v using stock cooler.
 
well I wonder about how you have gone about overclocking the 4850? Did you increase the frequency in 10 mhz at a time? I cannot believe that you cannot get stable oc @ atleast 650-670mhz?
 
i recall 1.3'ish i didnt write down initially my volts, i just cross checked alot with different sites results and it got me to 750 stable provided i ramp the single slot cooling 80-100 percent.
 
I can't overclock my VisionTek 4850 by more than 5 mhz, otherwise I get a bluescreen or vertical lines followed by a system restart.

thanks for the info. i am just checking if i could also step into the 800MHz realm by slapping a badass cooler on my 4850. reaching 800MHz on a 4850 is really tempting and sounds absolutely sweet.
 
im currently at 1.38 volts gets me to 800 comfortably well, 820 core Mhz but thats aftermarket cooling. i say go for the aftermarket cooling if not for more peace of mind your temps will be lower which is welcome in my book.

if im not mistaken 4870's run at or near 1.4 to achieve 800+ Mhz core speeds , and since the core are bout the same your gonna need near there for 800+ speeds somebody correct me if im wrong.
 
I've had my fair share of both Nvidia cards and ATI cards, have to say that Nvidia cards tend to overclock alot better then ATI cards, my first experience was OC'ing a friends GF3, my first real attempt on my own hardware was the 4600 (didn't OC for crap :( ), but when my X800pro that did OC like a mofo fried (my fault haha) my 6800GT held OC's better then it did.

But yea, sucks you got a dud of an OC'er, messing with video cards is possibly my favorite thing to do.

yeah im sitting comfortably at 800/1125 , how much more performance you think going from 800-850 i wonder.
 
I just dont want to fry the card by messing with the bios.You would obviously not have any warranty then
 
this is true, i guess overclocking is for those willing to gamble for more performance. hey least yours works :)
 
I am trying to get rid of my card right now.I have someone with a E8400 and a p35 d3sl mobo for dirt cheap.
I gotta get a case,ram,and a Os then I can be running on a intel build

that's awesome OC, i guess it runs faster than a stock 4870.
 
From what I've gathered, stock 4850's would do anywhere from 680-700 on the core and upto 1100 on memory on stock voltage. Even if one started venturing 705-710 there is a BIG chance of crashing/BSOD'ing/whatever. A later revision, like Palit Sonic edition, is able to hit much higher on stock, like I've gotten my 4850 Sonic to 770/1250 without touching any voltage with ease thanks to its 8pin and 3 phase. I wonder what this baby can do with a simple pencil mod.
 
700/1100 on both cards using 1.149 maximum CCC .xml voltage. Rock stable. Cards can do more easily with a pencil mod, but I toned it down with Crossfire. Will probably go back to around 770/1100. Anything past 730-740 core seems to suffer from diminishing returns.
 
Obvioulsy there are some duds on there, I already mentioned earlier in the thread that I have one, well, it's even worse than I thought. I applied the pencil mod to increase both my core and mem voltage. Only thing I achieved in doing was higher temps and a high pitched squeel from the video card. Wasn't able to OC anymore than I was with the default voltages. Guess I'll just have to settle for stock clocks with this card.
