4850 Dissapointment...?

Do you guys not read the previous posts in the thread? I fixed the performance issues.

We're telling you that even though the card is working better it's not working to it's best because your motherboard is severely limiting it immensly. People are just trying to let you know as it's probably something VERY IMPORTANT that you should consider. It's fantastic that you fixed your performance issues but it was just a courtesy to let you know that that 4x slot is not a particularily good idea.

That's fine, it just sounded like people were trying to explain my issues. I don't know what to tell you, but I am very happy with the performance so far. Plus, when I do get around to upgrading the mobo, this is a good combo to take with me. And besides, for $300, I can't complain.

Not that im going to update my system,, but this new Xfire talk sounds like its going to cost a lot,, hmm x2 cards about 400$ for the low ball ones and 200+ for a new x38, x45 MB. Then ya got to get new HS for the cards cause they sound like poo poo if they idle at 80c.. And if ya dont have a good PS your going to have to toss in some more green. Guess I had to much wine tonight. :p

I have duel 4850's with no mobo at the moment, I was hoping that the 8x8 crossfire pcie 2.0 on this mobo would be fine, Asus P5Q-E P45. I got such a great deal on the 4850 through bestbuy that I feel I wouldn't mind at all spending money on a x38, or x48(x48 would be pointless if I don't feel like buying DDR3 ram now, and will probably upgrade the mobo in 2 years, right?) If anyone would advise me to purchase a x38 or x48, would you please link me the model that you would recommend, it seems to me like the mobo is one of the hardest parts to buy.

I'd say just stick with the P5Q-e and only go with X38/X48 if you're unhappy with it. I was surprised by the tweaktown review but really the main differences seemed to be at ultra high res. 25x16 with aa. at 19x12 it doesn't seem to have that big of an effect... Also I really want to see some other sites do a similar review cuz tweaktown me no like.

Asus Maximus Formula for the win . X38 chipset. This is the best board i have had in a very long time

LOL, I have to rep my P5B-Deluxe Wifi/AP. Got it when CompUSA was closing 2 years ago for $120. It's been the most solid, stable motherboard I've used. OC's well and has lots of options. My next board will definitely be an asus deluxe wifi/ap board.

BTW, P965 ftw...

I have the Abit IX38 QuadGT, and I have to say it's a great board. Lots of features, and of course Dual 16x PCI-E 2.0 ports. I'm going to probably get two of the 4870s if the performance boost is big enough. The price is right I think now. I've always liked ATI/AMD's stuff, but I'm not one who will only get something because of the brand. I will get what's good for the price and performance. That's why since the 8800 GTS 320 SC card came out, I switched from my X800 Pro, to it and haven't looked back until now. Right now I have a 9800 GTX, but I just took it back because of the reviews of the new ATI cards, plus the price drop. I'm very much leaning to get an ATI card now. Even if the 4870 is not quite as fast as the GTX 280, who freaking cares? Let's say that it's 10% or even 20% slower. It's going to be half the price. That's kinda a "no duh" moment. At least, I think so. :)

One more thing I was going to mention. ASUS just added an extra 512 RAM to their 4850s, bringing that total to a gig. That's great news for cross-fire because one of the biggest bottlenecks that I have had with SLI/Crossfire is that they both get slowed down because they don't share their ram and the ram that they have is to little for what they are trying to do. Anyway, just thought I'd bring that up as I'm probably going to get a 4870 with at least a gig of RAM once they come out. :)

For a guy like me with a nice clocking 8800GTS 4850s in Xfire really gain very little at 1680x1050..

I am already able to pull 15.5K in 06.

Two cards to beat that by a few thousand?..meh...

I don't see what all the fuss is about really...lets see the 4870...if it can run cool..

It shows the 4850 as the card that has 1g, if there's one for the 4870 that has a gig let me know where to look cause it's not on that page. those that are interested in the 4870 should hit this page up anyway because it has the specs for the 4870 from Asus (in case you haven't seen them yet)

That doesn't bother me as much. Remember the 8800 GTs? Those were easily in the upper 80s on load. These are a bit cooler than that. I'm not worried.

And no, I don't know of a review yet since it was just announced. I'll keep my eyes open though!

looking at your motherboard, looks like some of the problems could be due to bandwith. I had the same problem when i added a second hd 3870. Your second pci express slot only does x4, same as mine. And that screwer performance.

There's your answer, if you're going to CF, make sure you get either a X38 or 48, otherwise you'll be choked.
4850CF working properly should kill 8800GTSLI.

seriously what kind of cases are you guys putting your 4850's in? im using an Antec 900 case and my 2 HD4850's idle at 60C and full load is 80C and thats with the cards overclocked to 700Mhz core. some of you guys running 80C at idle? wtf??

Same case here, 80 degrees idle.

do you have the side panel fan installed? all fans installed here except the one that attaches to the end of the hard drive cage, all running at lowest speed.
No, no side fan. I had to break the anchors to get my CoolIT Eliminator in there last year. :(

If you are on Vista they are going to run a little warmer on idle if you have Vista Aero on because it's always rendering stuff. Honestly though, I repeat. I had two 8800 GTs in a Coolermaster 680. It has two fans right above where my video cards were. They were in the high 80s on load. Trust me, this is not that bad. This is normal for these cards. If you're really nervous, then change the thermal paste underneath with ArticSilver or something good. I saw one reviewer did that and the temps dropped 5-10c.

I agree. The cards are rated for the temperature which you get them at. Only if you want to overclock beyond support do you need to adjust your cooling system.

Ok, so does anyone have a recommendation for a board that will run these both at 16x?

any board that has the x38 or x48 chipset. i have an Abit IX38 Quad GT coming tomorrow. I looked at the x48 boards but I couldnt find a reason for the increase in price over the x38.

I have the Abit QuadGT. Lots of features, great performance, and great price. All solid state capacitors, etc. Great board!

I finally get to use the Crossfire on this thing! After getting rid of the GTX, I'm pulling for a pair of 4870s!

The Asus P5E Deluxe $220
X48 and can be flashed to a Rampage BIOS ($290) for free.

Cheapest X48 board with no sacrifice in performance at all from the $300 boards.

The P5E Deluxe looks good. I'm torn between this and the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 board as a replacement for my P5Q Pro (P45) if the impending reviews confirm that dual 8x/8x PCI-E 2.0 lanes are a bottleneck for two 4850s in Crossfire. I'm having trouble finding reviews for these boards. Opinions?

There's a 1 GB 4850 and a 1 GB 4870 as well.

"Oh, crap! There are *two of them*!!"
