I have 2 4850's Running crossfire, and I know that 1 4850 is more then enough to run Counter-Strike, but does crossfire work with it? what iImean by that is when there are around 4-5 Smokes in 1 location my FPS drops to a staggering 45-50 FPS which shouldn't be happening! what do I need to do to stop the graphic lag then there are smokes, I have the hardware to support it but how do I get it to work properly?

I just ran 3dMark Vantage, and my score does NOT see like im running crossfire but it is enabled in CCC and GPU-z says that its enabled... but my FPS, and Scores are pathetic... What is the correct way to set these two cards up..

When I google for counterstrike smoke grenade info, it seems that historically, smoke grenades tend to be a huge hit on FPS for anyone, so smoke grenade spamming is a common technique.

This page:

http://csnation.totalgamingnetwork.com/view.php/csinfo/commands.csn

mentions this console setting which may help:

fastsprites x
0 - regular transparent smoke grenade sprites (best quality)
1 - simple transparent smoke grenade sprites (faster)
2 - VERY simple transparent smoke grenade sprites (fastest)

There also seem to be techniques for removing fog entirely, usually involving setting the game to run directx 8.5, but servers tend to block that cheat.

Something called "high poly models" also seems to increase smoke lag but I'm not clear on how to turn them off.

yeah i know about those settings but with (2) 4850's should it really hit me that hard?

3dMark Vantage is made more for Nvidia cards than ATi cards, thanks to PhysX integration. Vantage is good only for comparing to other ATi cards, rather than across-the-board comparisons, which is why people still use 3dMark06.

Make sure you have the ATi icon in your system tray, right click, select your primary adapter, and tick the option to show the Crossfire icon. When a game starts using Crossfire, a semi-transparent ATi icon will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.

So how do i get counter-strike to run crossfire..

I tested COD4, RA3, TF2, HL2 all came up with the crossfire logo, but counter-strike didnt...

Edit: i found a way to get crossfire to work with Counter-Strike 1.6 but the graphics are all messed up... I set it to D3D but the graphics get all cut up and blocked and bad. how do i fix this issue? Also i get the crossfire icon when i run Software mode?? but not when i run openGL... whats up? does anyone know how get get crossfire graphics to run in counter-strike?

I've tested out cs:s with crossfired 4850's and believe it or not my performance went down in their timedemo and I didn't notice any gameplay differences. I was running my e8400 at 3.6 ghz as well so I'm thinking I wasn't cpu bound.

I think its also worth noting that my fps has been going down with each new driver release as well but its an older game so its understandable.

Yeah the thing is Crossfire wont even run in CS1.6 OpenGL but when you set it to Software or D3D id reads it as crossfire, the only thing i cant figure out is why D3D set up breaks up the graphics all ugly its really bad.. ill upload a picture and post it soon, but i get like 20-30 FPS running D3D and the graphics are choppy and there are weird lines everywhere...

when there are 5 smokes you do! haha

The smoke effects will lag you even in Crossfire. The solution is to enable simple smoke effects in the console, not to force Crossfire in a game where a single 4850 will get you 200fps.
