Anyone out there with a 2x4850 in crossfire config? Is there any microstuttering with two of these cards at the moment?
 
I'm gonna have them tomorrow, I actually have had them since last Friday but haven't been able to use them yet. The problem is, I've never seen micro stuttering so I wouldn't have anything to compare it with other than what I know of a single card. I'm not postive but running them on a p35 board which is 16x/4x crossfire would problem further cause micro stuttering because one card has is semi handicapped.
 
i played several games b4 selling one of them, i didn't notice any microstuttering . Call of duty 4 was at constant 91 fps .its the smoothest gameplay i have seen . if u r looking to buy a 4850 , take a look in my fs thread in my sig .
 
I haven't noticed any such thing. I'm able to play Crysis on Very high (FPS is around 25-30 but its playable).
 
I am thinking about crossfire 4850 as well if i can get them for $150 or so but my psu only has 2 pcie plugs. For you sli and crossfire folks out there how do you do crossfire if you need 4 pcie plugs and your psu only has 2? Is it ok to use 1 molex to pcie adapter and 1 native pcie plug on each card? My psu is a 700w ocz gamexstream.

hd4850 only uses 1 pci-e 6 pin plug per card.
 
What if i went 4870's instead? The question I wanted answered was how are people doing that with a psu that has 2 pcie plugs when they need 4, but i appreciate the heads up on the 4850 only using 1 plug. I'm still torn between a 4870 or a 4850CF and new x48 motherboard and cpu...
 
Dang, I forgot about the two plugs on the 4870.
Was considering making the plunge for one and buying a second later for CrossFire... But the HX620 doesn't have sufficient power I guess.
 
Running 2x 4850's. Was playing mass effect on all settings on high @ 2500x1600. Didn't seem to be microstuttering.

how will 2 4850's or 2 4870's work on this, or ????
 
wolf2009, why not just return the 4850's to Best Buy for a refund? Oh, and I would be interested in what the OP asked as well.

Thanks guys for the response. If those of you with 48xx in CF can give me some indepth review of any possible microstuttering that would be excellent! I'm looking forward to some feedback. Hopefully the microstuttering this time around is now greatly reduced or completely resolved.
 
I ran CF in ME @ 2500x1600 at all settings high. I didn't seem to see any FPS increase, maybe CF support is still in the works or something, but I didn't notice any microstuttering.
 
My Galaxy 8800GT requires 2 PCI-E power plugs too and it came with 4pin to PCI-E plug adapter in case your PSU doesn't have enough PCI-E plugs so I expect all cards that require more than 1 do. As someone else said though, they should be available to buy at your local computer store.
 
I haven't noticed any microstuttering in any of the games I've played, but it could exist without me knowing. Crysis seems really smooth however, and all my other games sans FSX run so fast that I don't think it would be possible to notice.
 
Well my X38 just arrived a day early so I should be reporting back later this evening with initial impressions :D
 
Woot, apparently FedEx borrowed Santa's sleigh, because the 2 4850s that I wasn't supposed to get until Tuesday showed up at the door today. Now I gotta kick out some benchmarks with the old card first so I can compare them to the 4850s.
 
Err, silly question, but I've been away from ATI for a while. :) Which 8.6 do I want to get, the Catalyst Software Suite, or the drivers + CCC? What's the diff?
 
CCC is the equivalent of Nvidia's "Control Panel", if you remember from Nvidia cards.
Unless you plan on using a 3rd party app (ATI Tray Tools for example) then you need CCC to change your graphics settings.

btw the "software suite" is drivers + CCC.
 
All I can tell you is these 4850's in CF feel even smoother than a 3870x2 + 3870 in CF. Incredible is all I can say.
 
If anyone uses Everest, they have a beta, build 1418, on their forums that'll read the temps, Utilization, fan speed, and video memory usage. Doesn't show clock speeds yet, unless they posted something newer today. Not really sure what it means by non-local video memory, I guess stuff cached in the main RAM vs the local video memory being the on-board?

EDIT: Turns out I spoke too soon, there's a 1419 out today, and that lists the GPU and Memory clock speeds now. The memory usage numbers don't seem to work right, but that's the least of my worries, I have all the infoz I need.
 
Well it works, I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the mixed bag. If I try to run Crysis in CF, my FPS is piss poor, but if I turn off the CF, then I get about equal the FPS my 8800GTX got. In the Devil May Cry 4 demo, in CF, I get double the FPS that the 8800GTX did, and I'm getting about double the FPS in COD4.

The damn fans are noisy when playing, though since I wear headphones, I guess I can't complain too much at the moment. I'm hearing more noise at idle than I did with my 8800GTX, I have to double check that it's not vibrational. And my system temps have gone up about 3 degrees. Can't wait to watercool these.
 
I was going to CF my 4850's this weekend but our local worstbuy was out of stock as usual and the fact that crysis sees no gains from CF sealed the deal for me. The single card is tearing up all my other games except for crysis and tomb raider legend. For some reason the 4850 struggles noticeably more on tomb raider legend than my old 8800gts 640 did. I also get more micro stuttering in cod2 and cod4 than i did with my 8800. Seeing as I pretty much only play cod2 multiplayer these days this is getting to be annoying. I'm also getting a lot more games crashing and locking up now than I did with the 8800. This card is amazing but I think the drivers were slapped together with a lick and a prayer and after dealing with nvidia's bullshit vista drivers for a year with the 8800 I have no desire to go through it again with ati. I'll keep the card anyway for use in my htpc since it has hdmi audio out but it may get taken out of my game machine if ati doesn't get their shit together soon and release some drivers that work right.
 
One 4850 now, another one later when you feel you need a lot more performance or want to make it last longer. The next generation of ATI GPUs should be farther away than the 3k-4k step right? I don't expect them to last me as long as my 9800 Pro did but..

I bought a demo (stood unpowered in a store chassi) MSI K9A2 CF 790X mobo for half the retail price last Friday (online), it's going to give me 8x8 instead of 16x16 but that was what sealed the deal for me and my tiny budget :)

I've been reading that the 3k series was more of a refresh/tweak of the 2k series.. the 4800's are a brand new architecture, so I'd assume the 5800s will be a refresh of these cards-- in other words, they'll be faster but probably (?) not groundbreaking.

If this 4850 lasts me even close to the 3 years my X800XL lasted, I'll be very happy. :)
