I have a 430watt Enermax,

is NVIDIA trying to say I got to buy a Antec trupower 480 or another 480watt psu?

god damnit how will all this hold up with summer round the corner and 3.6ghz cpus!!!

I'm glad I have my Antec TruPower 550 watt now. And You're probably good with 430 I would guess. Like how a Radeon 9800 Pro's are supposed to get 300 watts but they are run in SFF systems with like 200-220 watts.

Anyway, now that watt recommendations are so high me and my PSU are like best friends now. We do everything together. We watch movies, play sports, and talk on the phone. Just don't take a shower with them, they can sting you....

toms hardware :p
we measured the power consumption while going through the options of the BIOS. As you can see, the boot-up power draw of the GeForce 6800 Ultra is below that of the Radeon 9800XT.

no new psu for me :D

well then look at while playing the games. the power cunsumption is pretty much the same. my 420w is fine :D

I cant even grab a decent fucking 350W psu in my country.. guess i am going to stick w/ my current card unless ATi has a better design for me!

Importing a psu from the US will cost me a fortune!

Boot-up power was a big problem with the 9700. Everything draws a lot of power at bootup. All the mobo's caps are charging up and harddrives, Fans and CD's are spinning up.

It would cause a lot of <400 watt powersupplies to fail on a cold boot, but be fine on a reset as the caps would have had time to pre-charge by then.

It sounds like Nvidia found a way to delay the videocard startup power draw... Sort of like setting a 1 to 10 second harddrive spinup delay in the BIOS to ensure a smooth bootup on marginally powered systems.

But regardless, I would stick to the recommended Nvidia PSU of 480watts to be on the safe side, 430 if you have a minimal config and an ultra. The non-ultra sounds more lenient on power, maybe even a 380 might be passable.

Still, a lot of folks with low end or low amp on the 12V rail PSUs are going to find themselves upgrading if they go with the 6800U. Not the hardcore enthusiast, who probably has a fine PSU already, but the folks hitting the shelves of BB or elsewhere with money to burn who don't know much.

Well I have an Antec Truepower 430watt supply now. The unfortunate thing is I am not far from max load now. So a higher end PSU is more than likely in order. Time for True Power 550

I am an avid SFF user and there are several things I don't like here. Heat and Power. Some serious thought has to be given to these heat issues especially. People want smaller quieter PCs - and don't want to sacrifice speed.

I want faster and more powerful videocards and CPUs, but we have now reached a stage where things have gotten too hot and need too much power, and companies, at least Nvidia, won't seem to want to engineer around it. Cases in point:

Why can't Nvidia design a single slot solution for their high-end cards? Maybe it is just cheaper for them to make us use two. All the heat that is being generated requires lots of noisy fans and these bulky coolers. Add a prescott to the mix and you can cook a chicken in your PC.

Also, what other company is going to demand that users spend a lot of money on something that they should never notice, a PSU? All those tech calls to Nvidia where they say, "sorry you have a power supply issue - we don't cover that."

The company that satisifes my goals will get my dollars.

If you can get more then 20a on the 12v line then you should be fine, atleast thats what the beta testers are saying and I remember many of them had 430w in their cases.
Nvidia just recommends a 480w PSU because people have different hardware. As for the two slot cooler, many reviews are noting that it actually runs alot cooler then a 5950Ultra and that a one slot is entirely possable.

Its not the raw wattage thats the problem its the fact the card draws from the 12v rail which the motherboard uses.
Trust me Nvidia isnt recommending 480w for no reason I'm sure they've tested 430w PSU's with poor results.
